MYOB question - how to change financial year?

Hi, I have been using MYOB for about a year now, and didnt ever realise that it must have been set up for a december to december financial year! How can I change this to a April to April financial year (like we have in the UK)?? I cannot get the reports to do the period I want if I leave it as it is...

Many thanks,

Reuben

Did you look at the program documentation, either printed manual or Help?

Be prepared: it may not be possible. I don't know MYOB, but changing the year-end is possible in some programs and not in others. You might have to start over next May 1.

When you get all the information for the year through April entered (i.e., the April balances are correct - check with your accountant - you can "start a new fiscal year" and select April 2006 as the next year end. If you have not started the 2005 fiscal year ending December 2005 yet, you can at this time start the new 2005 year ending April 2005 and have MYOB be in the correct fiscal year right now.

Go to File-Start a New Year-Start A New Fiscal Year to get it done.

Ok what happened was I started using it in May last year, and I have never done any of this 'start new fiscal year' thing. All I found was then when I tried to do the report generation it would not let me do it from april to april, just from december to december. So, should I go and start new fiscal year now ending April 2005, and that should fix it?

What is the best way to back up all the information, and how do I import it all if it goes horribly wrong..?

Thanks for the help,

Reuben

Why use a package that puts you to this sort of grief. Throw it out and buy QuickBooks - the notion of starting a new fiscal year is unknown. You are able to define the starting month of your financial year whenever you wish.

Always back up a file before you do anything "different" with it. Try starting the year ended April 2005 and test to see if you can still enter information for the rest of this month. Also, try changing a transaction from near the beginning of the year, and then change it back You'll need to check Setup-Preferences-Security and make sure the top checkbox is clear. Also be sure the Lock Period allows you to change transactions throughout the 2004-2005 FY.

It might be worth while to consult with an MYOB consultant to make sure you're getting top mileage from the program, which I enjoy a lot more than QuickBooks.
