Migration

I have a client whom I am migrating from Windows 98 to XP. He is currently using Peachtree Complete Realease 6.0. (Yes, I have advised him to upgrade.) What is the best method for moving his data tot he new computer? Thank you for your assistance.

Is this a new computer or just an upgrade to XP? If he is just upgrading, I would suggest that he use the clean install option. Back up the important files on the hard drive as it will reformat the hard drive. This seems to reduce the problems folks experiance when upgrading to XP.

Make a couple of backups of the company file(s). Copy the file to the XP hard drive. If this was burned to a CD you will need to check that the properties of the file are not read-only.

On the new computer install release 6.0. You probably should also check for updates but I don't know if they are still available for your version.

Create a new company with the same company name as your existing company using the New Company wizard. All you need is the company name filled in. Then restore the backup file into this existing company.

It's a new computer. I've been working in IT for several years and understand how to migrate users from one computer to another or how to upgrade them if they are using the same machine. However, this is the first time I have ever encountered Peachtree. I do not want to comprimise the users data. If I'm understanding you correctly; use the backup option on the old machine and enter the company name on the new one using the New Company Wizard. Is there a restore file option available or do I have to manually copy the backup file to the required location in the file tree? Thank you

Brian

In Peachtree, under File you will find both the Backup and Restore options. You can also copy the backup file to anywhere on the hard drive and just navigate to that files location.

One thing to be careful about Brian is that Version 6 didn't use the same backup options as the newer versions. You could do a "simple copy" which just made a copy of the user folder or you could use the Windows 95/98 backup feature. If the V6 data was backed up with the Windows backup, you may not be able to restore it using the Win XP restore command. I suggest you use the File, Backup, Simple Copy and copy it to a CD, Zip or Flash drive then just copy it back under the Peachw folder on the new PC.

Realistically, all the data is stored in the company folder located under the Peachw folder. When creating a company folder, Peachtree uses the first three letters of the first company name word, the first three letters of the second word and the first two letters of the third word. For example if the company name is Alpha Construction Inc, the data is stored in ALPCONIN.

The user should then really upgrade to a new version of Peachtree because if they have any customized forms (invoices, checks etc), they may have difficulty using them on a new operating system, especially if they have a new printer as well.

Thanks to all of you here! I came looking for the same answer. I am performing the same migration as Pestilence76. Great group!
