barcodes Issues

I swear RMS is nut, after solving the barcodes to appears on all the Matrix Items not just the Parent, I am having another problem with the barcodes reading. when adding a matrix and the Item lookup codes is somehow created by the RMS such as " levis8balcklowrs" I am using 3 of 9 extended and all I see is black lines, if the Item lookup under 7 digits or If I scan the manufacture one, the POS scan nicely but anything above 7 digits the POS can't read or gives the wrong Data, it is screwing up big time. Any Help.

Different barcode formats have different rules. None of them will handle heavily alpha based codes well. Some will do OK with something like 12345B, but ABCDEFG is less likely to work out for you...

In general, use numeric only codes and keep them as short as possible (6-8 digits will generally produce very high rates of successful scans).

Yes, you can include letters in many formats. No, you will not be happy with the results.

Random numbers work fine for look up codes - the look up codes don't have to be Descriptive - that is what the Description field is for...

For specifics on the characters supported by the various barcode formats, just google "Barcode format" and you should find plenty of hits

- I know there is one called "Barcoding 101" that is a pretty good intro...

I am utterly confused by barcodes, so hopefully someone else will post. In the meantime, you may (or may not) find some help at:

While most of it will be rediculous technical details, you may find some keywords you can use to help find the culprit of your problem. For example, from the site:

"Code 39 is an alphanumeric bar code. The symbol can be as long as necessary to store the encoded data. It is designed to encode 26 uppercase letters, 10 digits and 7 special characters. It can be extended to code all 128 ASCII characters by using a two character coding scheme."

Perhaps your lookup codes are, say, lower-case letters. Since the format only allows up to 7 special characters (7 lowercase?), perhaps that's a problem?

I dunno. Hope this helps... and that someone else posts that knows what they're talking about! Good luck!

Talk to your reseller about options for auto-generating lookup codes. I have no idea why this is not built into RMS directly, but there are several third party add-ins at will provide this functionality along with other enhancements for a clothing business.

You'll need wider labels for the barcode to fit using 3 of 9. That is why the code is appearing in black in item properties. Start lopping off some characters and watch what happens to the screen view of the barcode. Try increasing the size of the barcode label box in your label format.

RMS can easily render barcodes up to 16-17 characters long on 2-1/2 wide labels if you use barcode format 128A (full ASCII support with upper case letters only) or 128B (lower case supported).

If you are running RMS 2.0 you could use the style code for the clothing item plus abbreviations for the dimensions. Then the item code will look something like 12345BL28. (style 12345 Black Size 28)

If you need a more sophisticated approach to matrix management, consider our Matrix Master add-in. Become a matrix master in 10 minutes (recording):
