Catalog pictures in item list

I don't think there's any way out of the box. Someone may be able to write you an add-on to do that, but you would have to have a super fast processor and lots of RAM or it would probably feel like you were wading through quicksand. The overhead needed to accomplish it probably wouldn't be worth the benefit. Craig

We have built a number of customization to the Item Lookup Screen, and this certainly is up our alley, but Craig is most defiantly correct. The more images you have to load at once the greater the strain on memory, processor and disk usage. We have a proposed a solution to our prospect, Include a button in POS screen that would open a similar screen that would replicate POS screen with additional option of having item images. This is an aspx page.

No offense, but a good programmer could cache low-res pics in memory and do this with NO noticeable slowdown in the GUI. Think about a windows XP folder with pictures in it. A pic is displayed in the left bar as you highlight items.How do you think they do that? Magic? No. Todays' processors are fully capable of doing what Matt is asking. Saying that there is a technical limitation to the request is just plain wrong.

Maybe there is misunderstanding about what Matt is asking. I think he just wants the picture to come up in a little box while he searches through Item list in Manager or the search/find list in POS. I am sure he would wait .05 seconds for the picture to display, and wouldn't care if it didn't appear if he was holding down the down arrow.

This is a no brainer. If this isn't in 3.0 (along with a lot of other feature enhancements) I am going to stick with 1.3 and start preparations to move to another system.

Hmm, I wonder why when I search through pictures on my new dual core duo PC with 2 gigs of ram it takes more than a second for each picture. Oh, I can see a little thumbnail quickly enough, but try to get a viewable picture in the same time frame.... The file better not be too large, oh that's right you were talking about low res pics, I wonder if I'll be able to figure out what it is? A second or two might not sound like a long time , but multiply it by 5-6000 pictures or more. One more thing, what about all the retailers that don't have high end machines running their POS, not to mention the ancient network connections in their stores. Craig

And since when is it hard to identify a picture at say 640x480 with JPG compression, whic might result in a file size of under 10kb?

I stand by my analysis that this would not be a drag on the system if implemented with speed in mind.
