Copied a item in Headquarters now original item gone

I copied a existing item in headquarters, changed the Item lookup Code and everything else. OK'd it and now the original item I copied from is missing from the database, This has happend twice. I've done it many times with no problems before. Can this item be recovered and how? Has anyone experienced this? Thanks
