Credit card swipe status

Is it possible to get a prompt to show the status of a credit card entry using code or triggers without getting into a complicated add-on? To clarify, this relates to my problem where some credit cards, even though swiped, get recorded as manually entered. Could this condition be reported in the HTML status window or as an alert in a popup if a card is reported as a manual entry. Any ideas?

The only place I can find it is is SOM - Utilities - Settle EDC Batch. Highlight a transaction and then click the VIEW button. It will show a status of manual or swiped on that screen. Once you settle the batch that information is gone as far as I can tell.

I suspect this information is stored in the VISANETAUTHORIZATIONS table, but I have not had time to run down a manual entry and compare records to figure out which field it is stored in.

For MC/VISA I can check transactions after-the-fact by logging into First Data's My Merchant View. If you lookup the transaction there it will tell you the swipe status.

I had an AMEX fraud come in this morning and had to call VITAL to make sure the transaction cleared as 'card present' (swiped). I think I have a clue now to the cause of manual status on 'swiped' cards, but have not been able to verify yet. It may have to do with transactions where RMS pops up a message that a card number may not be valid. According to my cashiers, sometimes if you hit OK instead of cancel, the tranaction will complete. I suspect these may be 'partial' track reads, where RMS gets enough info for card # and expiration, yet fails as a 'swipe'.
