Downsizing RMS -> Moving from HQ to Store Ops?

Feb 27, 2007 9 Replies

Our setup currently consists of 4 stores along with HQ's. One store is being sold, one is closing down, and the other two are at the same physical location, but were setup as two different stores in RMS (combining these two wouldn't be a problem). The manager wants to focus on growing this one location.

Is it going to be possible to move from the HQ environment we are currently operating in to a Store environment. Is this even the best route to go? We won't have anymore store transfers or inventories to watch other than the one store.

Curious what suggestions some might have and/or insight on what the best path will be for moving forward.

Our current licenses (maintenance plan thru 9/26/2009): Location 1: RMS Store Ops for 1 user Location 2: RMS Store Ops for 1 user Location 3: RMS Store Ops for 3 users and HQ for 5 users Location 4: RMS Store Ops for 1 user (This store is not under a maintenance plan anymore)

Thanks, Michael

I have a similar situation. A customer who previously used HQ is splitting the company. They only really need one location so I am just thinking of backing up the store database and continuing with that one. The other "location" was a warehouse so there is very little if anything needed from the other location. But it would be nice to "combine" the sales history from both. Any thoughts?

Todd send me an email please. The combining of sales figure is possible but it is a bit complex. As to the downsizing mentioned by Mike it is one of those things that happens. Technically speaking the license is registerred to a user and you cannot sell it. With 1.3 since the license is a dongle I guess you can sell it [though not 100 legally correct] and the system will work. With 2.0 the license is hardawre bound and customer bound. So a bit more tricky. Talk to your reseller.

Hi, I have some questions - Are all 4 stores and HQ currently working together. Is data being updated from all 4 stores to HQ and vice versa. Do you want the balance 2 stores to be operated from HQ ? Do you want to keep the store history in HQ ? In the above scenario - You can delete the 2 stores if the store sales history is not required to be maintained. Other ideas -

  1. Store is being sold. You can uninstall the HQ Client. This will prevent the HQ communication. Also there could be some querries to reset the HQID for all items but it may not be required. Also change the configuration setting in Manager like connect to HQ for Open ARs and Global customers.

  1. Store is closing - You are left with an additional store license.

  2. The remaining stores if they are currently operated centrally with HQ you can continue doing the same.

Yes, our store manager would also like to keep sales history, journal information, etc.

A few pro's (from our standpoint) of operating in a Store environment vs HQ's are:

1.) Simplification. It seems that removing the HQ environment would reduce user caused errors in inventory levels/cost/pricing etc. 2.) No need to run various worksheets

What are some other pro's to removing the HQ element? Are there reasons why keeping HQ's would be an advantage (something that would give us more options)?

Mihir, Thanks for your input. I've responded to your questions below:

Are all 4 stores and HQ currently working together? Yes, currently all four stores are operating together. They are essentially the same type of store, just various locations.

Is data being updated from all 4 stores to HQ and vice versa? Yes, data is being updated from the stores and HQ's is pushing data down to the stores.

Do you want the balance 2 stores to be operated from HQ ? Ultimately, we are going to end up with only 1 store location. The second store is somewhat a psuedo store in how it's being used. We bought the license with something in mind, which didn't pan out, so we put it to use a different way. If it makes sense to continue operating one store in an HQ environment, then we will, but I thought it may simplify things to remove HQ's.

Do you want to keep the store history in HQ ? Yes, the store manager has expressed interest in keeping store history.

In the above scenario - You can delete the 2 stores if the store sales history is not required to be maintained. Other ideas -

Michael,

1 store in an HQ environment does not make sense.

I would remove HQ for now. Uninstall HQ Server and HQ client.

Make sure you revise the security for cashiers and configuration options in Manager.

Is it best to start fresh with a new Store setup, or should we move forward with the current store and just remove the connection to HQ?

Thanks!

I would move forward with the current store. This will keep all history. Change security to edit and create items, etc at store. Change SO Manager configuration as necessary. Uninstall HQ client. Uninstall HQ Server.

Mihir
