Do you have any Firewall software running? i.e. Norton, McAfee, WindowsFirewall... If you do you will want to configure both your registers and your back office machine to allow SQL to have access.

thanks for the response.

there is no firewall etc. running on any of the machines.

i need to know how to input the name/path of the computer holding the database so i can input this in the server name field in the store operations admin configuration dialogue box (database tab).

thanks

Nick,

Go to the office machine and make it so that it has a static IP address.

Go to the POS machines, SO Admin | File | Connect | server is the IP address of the back office machine | change the database name appropriately. Now do the same in File | Configuration

Make sure that each station has its own unique Register number

Thanks Jeff.

i made the office machine IP address static (it was anyway). followed the rest of the instructions, but i still cannot connect. i get the following error message when i try to connect using SO Admin | File | Connect | server is the IP address of the back office machine :

SPECIFIED SQL SERVER NOT FOUND CONNECTION OPEN (CONNECT())

when i use the "test database connection" function using SO Admin | File | Configure | server is the IP address of the back office machine, i get the following error message:

ERROR # - 2147467259 [DBNETLIB] [Connection Open(Connect()).] SQL Server does not exist or access denied. (Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provided for SQL Server) (SQL State: 08001) (Native Error : 17) No Help file available

Nick,

Sounds like the SQL isn't running. What OS? If XP, did you restart after installing RMS?

In the bottom right in the system tray is there a little silver computer with a red or green triangle on it? If its red, double click on it and select Start and also check Auto-start

You did install SQL right? When going through the RMS installation you where offered a Skip or Install button and did you select Skip and didn't install it. If so re-install.

Here's another thing you may want to check.

Go to Start, All Programs, Microsoft Retail Management System, Client Network Utility. Be sure TCP/IP is showing under "Enabled protocols by order".

Not sure if you just have to check the server or all machines in this case, may want to check all just to be sure.

One more suggestion, if you have Norton Internet Security, try disabling it then attempt to connect to see if it's a setting within Norton that needs to be set.

My two cents.

thanks for the suggestions

i managed to solve the problem by completely uninstalling both RMS and SQL and reinstalling them both.

My advice to other users would be to set up your network protocols and ensure that your network, whether LAN or otherwise, BEFORE installing RMS etc. It seems as if SQL does not recognize any changes made to the machine's network protocols after it has been installed and instead stores such data as when the installation is made.
