Import excel into RMS

I need to import excel file into RMS is the only way thru EMS, or is there another option?

You can download the "Quicksell Import Tool" from the downloads section of

- you have to create an account, but it's free. The quicksell import tool is an UNSUPPORTED tool that MS released several years ago. You can use it to import Items, suppliers and customers. I tried it once and found that it was easier for me to just load the files directly into SQL Server and move the data around from there - but I'm a SQL geek...

A lot of people seem to like EMS, and at least it is supported.

Retail Realm has also released an import tool recently, but I haven't seen much feedback on that one yet. Contact your reseller or check out

Make sure that its the newest version, seems like in the last month or so they released a new version. Its mentioned in the KB somewhere and I think you need to call Support to get it.

Yep, they released it last month, 1.5.0.4. Call Support to get it

Hi Glenn, You advised me to use the import option to read files from a portable scanner for inventory reconcilliation. I found such option. Now, I need to format a file for the scanner to organize data into something the RMS can understand. If I have 3 fields in text delimited format, say, itemlookupcode, quantity, date, would you happen to know, exactly, how the format is set?...like separated by commas, colon for dates, etc?...

I'm tempted to export a datafile from RMS to open it in text delimited to see the format, but I think there might not be a date on it, or is there?...

Thanks.

I'd highly recommend you do this on a copy of your database the first time, and not live. Do you have more than one register? Do you know how to set up a test copy of your database and link to it with Administrator?

Will your physical coincide with your tax year end? If not, any inventory report will only show current inventory value, no ability to get a total for another date except to manually (on paper or spreadsheet) back out transaction summary figures like cost of sales and receiving since year end.

You really only need 2 fields from your handheld for import that's formatted as:

ItemlookupCode, Qty ItemlookupCode, Qty ItemlookupCode, Qty etc.

using comma as delimiter. You don't need date. RMS will give you the option of adding the same date to all items after you import the file if I remember correctly.

Look through all the messages with "physical" here to see any other caveats.

It's not a very intuitive process so ask away when you hit a wall.

Thanks,

I do know how to copy database. I have many versions and test things on them.

The maker of the scanner will set up a file for me, but they need to know the format that RMS can recognize. The M5000 is really easy to use, I didn't have to do anything, just used a sample data file and it scanned the itemlookup codes nicely. Perhaps I will use the sample database from RMS and test as you recommended. The way the sample data was set up was really smart. It's very easy to observe the behaviour of the function you want to try, what's missing or what's right/wrong!....

Honestly, I haven't really had time to fully make use of the HQ except to keep my two locations with matching items and prices. I only need to update when creating new items, not an everyday thing. My business is still small. I still track a lot of things mannually as I learn and computerize whenever money and time allow......So, book-keeping is not a major worry as I still have the old system in place.

I have to go on a trip and will get back at the end of the month to try it again. This forum is so busy, with a lot more questions than answers. I even lose track of what I need to ask. Will MS try to do something about this?... That's where the frustration is!...

Not if they want to retain their base of certified resellers. There's no shortage of support. Your frustration is that you can't get "free" support, except for the few rsellers who answer questions on their own time here and the other knowledgeable end users. Did the reseller tell you that if you bought from him, there'd be no additional charge for support if you bought a maintenance contract? Did he explain the 48 hour delay and then only if the question isn't answered? I'd like to know how you got the wrong impression you've been demonstrating. An distant online discount reseller has an incentive to tell you it works that way.

Glenn gave a good explanation of what this forums about.
