Importing Data - Excel Heading Format

Hello, I'm new to MS RMS and SQL so please bear with me.

I'm trying to import items using Excel and EMS MS SQL but I don't clearly understand how to generate an excel template with the proper headings correlating to the data associated with each item in RMS. Is this a manual process? Do I need to create the headings based on the information I want to import? In addition, how does one insure the data entered in each cell is within the constraints of MS RMS? For example the item description in RMS has a maximum character width of 30 characters. One can type many more characters in a cell. How do you insure the data is correct for all columns setup?

Can someone help please?

Thank you!

Regards,

MConfoey,

You really don't need to name the Excel columns anything really. 1,2,3,4 will work, but you probably should name them something understandable, i.e. First or FName or First Name will all work fine.

For this example, your have 2 Excel columns, one will be called First and the other Last and this your Customer file you wish to import to.

In EMS, open your empty RMS Customer table, then tell EMS to use the Excel column called First to be mapped into RMS' Customer column called FirstName and the Excel column Last to be mapped into the RMS Customer column called LastName.

To add to Jeff's comments, regarding Description when prepping your file if you notice the Description fields go longer than 30 characters copy and paste the entire column into an empty column and give it a name of ExtendedDescription. You then don't lose any info.
