Matrices

In an attempt to create a matrix with 3 columns, my computer freezes each time. I have several products that come in many sizes. Each size has 3 parts that can be different colors. There are 15 different colors to choose from for each part. Can any one tell me why my computer will freeze each time? Can you tell me how to avoid this? Thanks

So your dimensions are: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 Each Dimension has 15 options (colors) available. Is that right? That works out to 15*15*15 = 3375 unique products. Is that what you are expecting to create? Are you creating a separate matrix for each size?

How does your computer 'freeze'? do you get an error message, or doe SO Manager just seem like it's not responding? How long did you wait? I've seem some RMS actions (like calculating a physical inventory) take

10 or 15 minutes to complete, during which it looks like Manager is not responding...

You could try creating a smaller matrix like 3 x 3 x 3 just to make sure that completes - I suspect that your issue is just in the size of the matrix you are creating, but if this happens on any size matrix it's something else.

Well, you could try just waiting longer for the operation to finish - it may still be working. Start the item creation then go to lunch; it may be done when you get back.

You could also try adding more RAM to the system you use for item creation, but I'm not really sure if that would help in this case.

I just ran a test creating a 15 * 15 * 15 matrix on my laptop (1.5 GHz,

1.5 GB RAM). It completed, but it was a really weird display. The SO Manager screen stopped refreshing and parts of my screen went grey. I was able to continue working in the background, but the SO Manager window was definitely goofy looking.

I went back and checked it after an hour and found a dialog box waiting to be closed - all I could see was the "X" of the close button. I clicked just to the left of the X and was able to drag the dialog around

- it was like an eraser on a chalk board - wherever it passed, the display of SO Manager came back to normal. All except the dialog itself

- I have no idea what it said, I suspect it was just a "job complete" message. Anyway, I finally clicked the close button and found that all

3300 of my matrix items had been created and SO Manger was working fine.

When I opened the properties of the matrix item, it took about 20 seconds to open the properties window. When I clicked Attributes from there, it took about 30 seconds to open the attributes window.

This is just a really big matrix, and RMS is not that good at handling that many records at once ( it loads all of the items into a single control - for that many items, some sort of paging would be more efficient, at least for display). You might want to take a look at Fashion Bundle from Retail Realm, or one of the other Matrix Management add-ins - I know Digital Retail Solutions has one, but I don't remember the name. There are probably other solutions out there as well, but I suspect that they are all going to suffer from the same issues that RMS has unless they were designed with a huge matrix in mind.

Try Matrix Master for RMS. Our matrix grid will accept up to 9,999 entries per item if you use the custom ILC option or generate a matrix using a style sheet. A 15x15x15 matrix will populate the grid worksheet with 3,375 entries in about 6 seconds. It will take about 5 minutes to add those entries to the database on a P4/1G Ram PC. Or about the same amount of time to remove them in two clicks if you made a mistake. You can easily update all component items in the matrix including prices, restock levels, etc. Or change descriptions in mass. Free trial download:
