Microsoft Responds to the Evolution of Online Communities

Date 5/4/2010 Starting in early summer 2010, Microsoft will begin progressively closing down the Microsoft public newsgroups to enrich conversations in the rapidly-growing
forum platform. This decision is in response to worldwide market trends and evolving customer needs.
Microsoft continues to invest in forums to reduce customer effort, consolidate community venues and make it easier for active contributors to retain their influence. Forums provide a healthy community environment with less spam and make answers easier to find by customers and search engines. Additionally, forums offer a better user and off-topic management platform that will improve customer satisfaction by facilitating discussions in a clean space.
We understand that some newsgroups are still active, and important to the community. In the coming days and weeks, we will be rolling out tools and resources to minimize disruption to the community discussions.
We are working diligently on providing additional resources and information in local languages later this week. In the meantime, please refer to the official Microsoft Newsgroup website http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/default.mspx concerning this issue. The Microsoft Newsgroup website will be made available in additional languages in the next few days.

Will you need to have an active maintenance plan to use The Forums? Does this translate to if you don't have a maintenance plan you will no longer be able to get peer-to-peer support?
I carried a maintenance plan for years, but stopped last year when I had received no value for it since RMS 2.0. I have never used a support credit, and only had one of many problems actually looked into by Microsoft. No suggestions were ever implemented and serious bugs were ignored and then marked off as solved after months, were nothing had actually been done or just completely ignored. ** End of Rant **
This newsgroup has been far more useful and effective support than that provided by Microsoft. It would be sad if the above is the situation.

No maintenance plan needed. See https://community.dynamics.com/forums/106.aspx The profile prompts you to link to your account, but does not require a current subscription. The loss of functionality that I see in this upgrade, would be if the forum could not publish to a news reader, which I think is more convenient, and the news group's ability to attach files to the posts.

Disappointing - not sure this is improving support for us users.

Matt - Thanks for the update. I agree about the newsreader too.
I do see where they have a problem if the community is split between the 2 sources. I remember when they moved the product suggestion feature to that forum. It was confusing and had very little activity at that time.

I as a partner have been using the forums and a few things to know
1) they suck for ease of use 2) they have created a converter to still use newsreaders because ease of use.

That tool seems to be for a different list of forums found at http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/categories which contains other dynamics discussions, but not RMS: Dynamics CRM CRM Deployment CRM Development CRM Online GP GP Deployment GP customization

I was just about to ask what the group name was, because I am not able to find it using the bridge tool. Please post back if you get the solution to finding RMS on there.

Matt and Marc,
Being as the new RMS forums are not in use yet, I think that is why you are not seeing them. The switch over is supposedly on a schedule, that will move the least used newsgroups first and then the more active ones. I think the entire transformation isn't due until August-September timeframe.
The problem is that there already is another Dynamics RMS "Community", https://community.dynamics.com/forums/106.aspx I don't know how this will be integrated into the switch, as its a completely different format too!
Partners have been using the new Forums for about a year and its not a pretty picture. Search has been broke for almost 3 months, the inability to attach files is a pain, there is no spell check (I use Google's Toolbar spell check when I remember to.), threads are hard to follow as they don't sort properly, an answer post is always posted at least twice if not more, HTML formatting sucks, it's very ssssllloooowwww at times, a lot of 404 and 500 errors, and on and on.
I tried using the NNTP add-on a couple of months ago and it didn't work too well with anything other than Windows Live Mail, OE, Agent, etc are out of the picture. That you have to continually update the add-on is a PITA too. Let's put it this way, through July 1, partners are entered into a drawing for something to use the Forums. That's how much the Partners like it.
There may be some good things out of it, primarily that threads are not deleted after 90 days as they are here, but if Search doesn't work, its a non-starter. You do get "points" for your efforts that earn you virtual "medals", one can setup notifications by email or Messenger.
The biggest issue is that MS is now tracking everything you do because of the LiveID login requirement and everything is getting too "social". I also suspect that at sometime, Partner stuff will accidently become Public stuff, not that I have anything to hide from.

I've always found forums to be clunky to use. The Newsgroup is so easy, it sucks they're getting rid of it. I personally have never used forums at all because I just don't like them. If they were able to provide us the same functionality(being able to interact with them using a newsreader) it would make it a lot less painful. I belong to a yahoo group that I don't mind because you can have the posts sent to you via email. That's not too bad, but you still lose a post here and there sometimes. Plus it seems to take a little while to post your comment to the group, so there can be quite a lag sometimes.
