Microsoft Responds to the Evolution of Online Communities

May 04, 2010 13 Replies

Date 5/4/2010 Starting in early summer 2010, Microsoft will begin progressively closing down the Microsoft public newsgroups to enrich conversations in the rapidly-growing forum platform. This decision is in response to worldwide market trends and evolving customer needs.

Microsoft continues to invest in forums to reduce customer effort, consolidate community venues and make it easier for active contributors to retain their influence. Forums provide a healthy community environment with less spam and make answers easier to find by customers and search engines. Additionally, forums offer a better user and off-topic management platform that will improve customer satisfaction by facilitating discussions in a clean space.

We understand that some newsgroups are still active, and important to the community. In the coming days and weeks, we will be rolling out tools and resources to minimize disruption to the community discussions.

We are working diligently on providing additional resources and information in local languages later this week. In the meantime, please refer to the official Microsoft Newsgroup website

concerning thisissue. The Microsoft Newsgroup website will be made available in additionallanguages in the next few days.

Will you need to have an active maintenance plan to use The Forums? Does this translate to if you don't have a maintenance plan you will no longer be able to get peer-to-peer support?

I carried a maintenance plan for years, but stopped last year when I had received no value for it since RMS 2.0. I have never used a support credit, and only had one of many problems actually looked into by Microsoft. No suggestions were ever implemented and serious bugs were ignored and then marked off as solved after months, were nothing had actually been done or just completely ignored.

** End of Rant **

This newsgroup has been far more useful and effective support than that provided by Microsoft. It would be sad if the above is the situation.

Marc

Disappointing - not sure this is improving support for us users.

Matt - Thanks for the update. I agree about the newsreader too.

I do see where they have a problem if the community is split between the 2 sources. I remember when they moved the product suggestion feature to that forum. It was confusing and had very little activity at that time.

Marc

I as a partner have been using the forums and a few things to know

1) they suck for ease of use 2) they have created a converter to still use newsreaders because ease of use.
