Are there any helps available for modifying the poslanguage.dat file? Anything that explains what each code in the file signifies? (for example, S1002=" Extended Code: ", and S1004=" Item: ", etc...) anything out there that explains what the S1002 and other codes refer to?

Not that I've seen. In fact, I think it may change from hotfix to hotfix.
Thanks Glenn - i read in the RMS KB that the modifications made to the poslanguage.dat file may not work from version to version, as you mentioned. i was hoping maybe those codes represented the names of screens and windows, and maybe there was a legend that defined which screen/window each code represented. but i can make changes to a copy of the file, and test it in a test database too.
