Networked systems

I am using RMS at two of my stores (using Retail Realm multi location) and have networked the system from our home office to the primary location where the database is kept. The problem I run into is the home office will run real slow during the day, and sometimes when creating a large martix (312 items) it will hang up and become unresponsive. Tonight when it did so it only created half the matrix and then I had to shut it down when it became totally unresponsive.

Is there any way to create the matrix off line (or work offline) and then upload any changes/additions into the main database? Or are there any other thoughts that might work?

To lessen any hanging from home;

-assuming at the shops you're running client/server;

-Windows2000/2003Server & SQLServer2000 is running well and is patched;

-your RMS SW is patched to at least sp2;

*because you're tapping into the server from home, I assume.

-how are you actually connecting?

-PCAnywhere or similair type connection?

-Are you using VPN?

-Remote Desktop? -doubt it - it would be as fast as the store network then-only your desktop view, at home, would be delayed-if you're using Remote Desktop and having these issues, assuming you have network issues at the shop.

-DBitems - if you have over 20,000 items, then check your RMS DB maintenance

- reindex and how long does it take-if over 5 minutes you have DB issues.

-Do you run SQL maintenance?

-you need at minimum a DSL line from home running at its fastest-if over

2000ft. from the telco CO, you cannot achieve this speed no matter what -DSL speed drops as you get farther away from Central Office (the actual line connection point).

-cable web access is quite fast, & is likely better.

-we use RRealm, and this SW is batching items on your local screen while still polling RMS/SQL, and in general, it is somewhat integrated into RMS even when making a batch of new items-because the parameters and dimensions you are filling out in RR anre coming from RMS -they are being pulled from the RMS DB. Not everything but a lot-Dept, Cat, Vendor, etc.

-RMS is polling SQL DB every second or so-your connection sounds like its unable to keep a constant DB synchronization. You need to maintain this, otherwise you risk corrupting any new items you are entering in this way, and you may need to run DB maintenance at the shop.

-You're batching way to many items with such a flaky connection-I would figure out the connection type/speed first before doing so much work.

g'luck
