POS Running in background

Morris,

It happens less frequently in 1.3 than earlier versions, but still not fixed. We always put the POS and Manager icons in the Quick Launch toolbar so you just have to single click it. Seems to help employees a little.

What would happen if the Icon were pushed in the middle of a transaction, and ended the process accidently? It seems less likely that they would accidently open task manager and then shut it down while surfing the desktop.

If this is a known problem why hasn't MS fixed it, I have not ever personally had any other program act this way.

Is double clicking a single click icon the reason this is happening?

Our employess all seem to have their home computers set to double click while I prefer work computer set to single click. So they are always double clicking the single click POS Icon, (and all other desktop Ions)

If setting Xp to double click will solve it I will set the POS to double click

I'm not sure what causes it but I doubt clicking has anything to do with it. In case we aren't on the same page here is what happens.

You close the POS portion of RMS by pressing ESC and choosing Yes. Now the next time you go to open the POS module you click the icon, wait a minute, and nothing ever happens. Opening task manager you will see that the POS process is still running even though you had closed the program and it should not be running. By highlighting it and clicking end task you kill the process. POS will now open normally.

It all comes down to the POS module refusing to open because there is already an instance of it still running. This little bat file basically just gives you a shortcut to kill the process so your users aren't screwing around in task manager to do it. Yes hitting the kill switch while POS is running will shut the program down but I don't think that should be a huge issue once you tell them what the shortcut does. Maybe if you've got the desktop set to single click it would be more of an issue to hit it accidentally.

Regardless, it's just a quick workaround. MS still needs to fix the actual problem. I have it happen at least every other day.

DD,

The real problem is that the program will not run twice nor will it switch to an already running copy.

People will get impatient and click on it again.

Morris,

You do know that you can configure POS to minimize, right? POS | Ctrl + F6 Screen | Transaction Screen tab | Window button | check off Show Re-sizable border

Yes I realize this, but I work in and out of manager and POS during the day and having them both open causes issues with a one application locking the printer from time to time. I prefer to shut it down when I'm working in manager.

But regardless of how you can set it, the fact is the program doesn't always close when you shut it down. It shouldn't still be a running process when I come back an hour later to reopen it.

We have that problem on two of out computers. The only way around it has been to open the task window and close the program there. Not sure what is causing the hang-up but it occurs every so often.

Morris,

Yeah, I have other programs that refuse to close, its not limited to RMS. Remember that this program was about 5 years ago, using then current technologies, by another company purchased by Microsoft. It will limp around for a 6-12 months until the re-write comes down the pike. Course then we will have new issues to deal with! ;-)

I'm curious about the printer lock. Receipt or report printer

Receipt printer. It probably has something to do with me editing receipts in one program and testing them in the other. The other reason I need to shut it down is that sometime having POS open cause Firefox to lock up when I try to open it. Shut down POS and FF opens fine. Not suer what causes this, but FF is our prefered browser so POS simply has to go when we use it.
