Folks, I just recently had this thread brought to my attention. Thanks for the kind words abour our site,
So why switch? After using Kosmos for over a year we found a couple of limitations that were keeping us from reaching the next level, the biggest were 1) problems with X-Cart and 2) problems with RMS integration. Here are some of the details:
1) x-Cart does not cleanly separate application logic from the skin. We customized the x-cart skin extensively. Unfortunately when it can time to upgrade x-cart we learned that no upgrades were possible without manually comparing code changes in every modified smarty template! We avoided taking updates for a while but eventually x-cart securty patches forced our hand. 2) Needed x-cart add-ons aren't very good. I love the x-cart community but was dissapointed with the quality of add-ons that we needed. The x-cart gift registry is notoriously bad (read the x-cart forums) and a 3rd party backorder package never worked properly (and we paid the vendor to install it). 3) Newestech Web integrator integration of the RMS and ecommerce databases is limited. WebIntegrator is great for copying inventory from RMS to your website but we needed more. For example, tottini carries both gift items and larger special order items so we wanted to remove out of stock gift items from availability but still allow purchase of custom order furniture. X-cart plus Web integrator had no solution so we left all inventory items on even when their inventory level reached 0. About 20% of orders were for out of stock items, so we deliberately held off promoting the site. :(Nitrosell's solution addresses all of these issue. Skins are cleanly separated from application logic and upgrades are seamless. A gift registry is built into the service. Our back order need was easily addressed by the Nitrosell's Product Attribute Manager. And there are other unexpected benefits like integration of gift cards, tax and shipping tables with our POS system. Keywords, catagory images and other data not included in RMS by default is managed from the Nitrosell Product Attribute Manager where all ecommerce and RMS data can be viewed and edited in one place.
As others have pointed out Nitrosell is a service whereas Kosmos is hosting an open source application. Anything's possible with x-cart if you are willing to pay for custom mods. However, at this point we're more focused on running a business and don't want to manage developers. Nitrosell's has the features we need and offers just enough flexability with their Nitroscript.
Now that we've relaunched with Nitrosell we're exercising the system (just to make sure there aren't any unexpected kinks) and then we'll start promoting the site. I've looked at a lot of ecommerce solutions and for RMS integration you really only have 2 choices (webIntegrator and Nitrosell). We've used both and right now we're really happy with the Nitrosell. Thx -Mike
