re-indexing

Hi all,

I see a lot of talk about re-indexing. Are there any performance gains to be made by doing this if there is no apparent corruption? Can it be done while POS is running? If not, how long does it take to re-index a 3 GB database on a moderate speed PC (ballpark, I won't hold you to it), minutes? hours?

Thanks, Marc

Marc, I noticed all the talk about re-indexing also. Jeff@checkpointsoftware who used to post here all the time was always recommending it, so I worked it into a scheduled batch file that runs once a week. I don't know if it helps or not, but the software runs very fast(searches, etc.)and I have had no problems since I started doing it about 2 years ago. I wanted to do that with check database also, but was never able to figure out the command sequence for that so I gave up on it. Craig

Craig,

Do you run the batch while you are open or after business hours? I guess I can head in early one morning to see how it works before business hours rather than risk running it during the day.

Marc,

It is scheduled to run after hours. I don't usually run any scripts or maintenance routines while I'm open, just to help avoid any pitfalls. I also have batch files that restart the computer at 6am every morning, one for defrag once a week, and one for backups every day. Craig
