Restaurant-type tip check?

We are a retail wine shop that, like many others in our area, does wine tastings. Because we are similar to a winebar during those events, we have a need for a restaurant-type two-step check with a tip line. We need to present the customer with an itemized 'check', then take a tender and return with a second 'check' which includes a tip line. We can do this using a separate Eclipse terminal, BUT the terminal will not hold the transaction for us to retrieve and complete the sale with the tip included. It works for a single transaction but we can't do more than one at a time (ie- hold oneor more, while we begin others).

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how we might do this? Or know of some simple, inexpensive restuarant software that would integrate into RMS somehow?

Unfortunately RMS is NOT designed to handle tips.

Just to finish this subject for the information of anyone who might need it (I note another post about RMS & a restaurant add-on).

In addition to RMS as a POS terminal, we also have a stand-alone credit card/check processor/gift card terminal. We have it because we do not want to use one of Microsoft's preferred merchant services companies and so we could not integrate those functions in with RMS. It was ordered configured to have a tip function, but until yesterday, we could only run one tip transaction at a time. WE now know how to hold transactions and recall them later so that we can handle several 'checks' at once.

The procedure uses the restaurant/tip function of the stand-alone terminal to solve the problem. In brief.... we run the sale on RMS to get an itemized guest check, using a tender type called 'Eclipse Terminal'. If the customer pays in cash, we complete the transaction with RMS. If they pay by credit card, we run the card on the Eclipse terminal and get two receipts with blank lines for tip and total (just like in most restaurants). We then go back to the Eclipse to do a 'tip adjustment' which adds the tip to the charge amount.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the reference, but I am not familiar with how to locate the article. I checked Microsoft Knowledge base both in general and under RMS and searches there come back empty. How can I find it? Thanks.

Not going with a maintenance plan is bad advice, particularily with RMS.

Unless you like running outdated software?

It was actually the rep from the company that sold us RMS that advised not to continue the maintenance. He said there was nothing in the new release that would be of any value to us and that either they or this newsgroup was as good a source of 'how to' info as MS.

Bad advice, I've learned many useful things, and located a lot of reports I needed from customersource. Craig

While I can't disagree with the lack of value in RMS v2.0, what about when (not if) a bug appears in the current version you are running? Depending on which features you use in the system, some of those bugs may not affect you. However MS will not support the older versions, because they expect you to be on the maintenance plan in order to be running the new versions.

Also, v3.0 is about a year away and is expected to be a complete re-write, with a move to the .NET platform, etc. I think that was originally promised in v2.0, but they have a habit of moving things back.

We are an RMS dealer and we are looking at writing an add-on to allow you to adjust the credit card amount between the time you get the authorization and the time you settle the transaction. So the process to the customer would be "normal," NOT like the procedure in the knowledgebase.

If we do this, would you like to be a beta site?

Hi Greg -

This post is a couple months old but if you're still planning an add-on and need a beta test customer, I volunteer.
