Server Spec

I am running 5 tills, and 6 back office computers, i have a 3.0GHZ dual core Pentium server, with 2GB of RAM, and am running full SQL Server. We are noticing times when thing are very slow, especially when we are doing large reports, and the server is also running our SAGE requirements- Should i have a faster server, or is the above spec adequeate?

Thanks for any help on this!

I'm not sure what SAGE is - is that your accounting package?

Anyway, you might want to boost the memory - more is always better, but

2GB should be adequate. Do you have any hubs in your network? If so replace them with switches. Run Task Manager on the server and see if it looks like your CPUs are at full use during these slowdowns. Also, check the memory usage - is it spiking during these times?

Reports can definitely slow things down - especially with multiple people running multiple reports at the same time. Reporting systems are usually optimized differently than transaction processing systems - since the RMS database is used for both, it's not really optimal for either. You might want to look into a solution that warehouses some of your RMS data to a separate area for analysis. The only one that I have looked at is Retail Analytics from Professional Advantage, but I think that is only for HQ - there may be other solutions available.

That's actually a good idea. Most reports are for time periods before today so are not "real time". In my old access database system, I copied the database locally and used that one for queries and reports. That way, I did not use server resources or interupt current activities in the databsase.

There should be a way.
