Do you have the "Detailed Sales Report" option in:
Reports|Sales|Detailed Sales
that one has date selection, and groups by Department with Total sales. You can also see the individual items listed in each Department.

Unfortunately, the top selling items list doesn't break things down by department and is cluttered with cheap items that we sell loads of (crickets, mice, rock, etc.).
