Transfer Out Serial Number Issue

I'm working on setting up RMS for a store. We have many items with serial numbers that we wish to be able to track. We sell many of the items retail but also use them internally to build assemblies that we sell. I have the database set up with the items and have serial numbers entered for the items. We are trying to use Inventory Transfer Out to take the serial items out of inventory for our assemblies and then Transfer In the completed assemblies.

I am seeing a problem with the serial numbers when issuing and committing the items. Transfer Out doen't appear to check the serial numbers list for the items to see if they are in inventory prior to committing the transfer order. It allows more than one unique serial number to be entered for an item. In fact it is allowing any serial number to be used - even numbers not in the item serial number list or inventory. It just adds the number to inventory if it doesn't exist or adds the duplicate number to the serial number list for the item. We have all of the options in Serial Number Options checked except for the first (allow POS serial number creation).

Is this a known issue? Is there a reason that it doesn't verify whether the serial number exists before transferring it out of inventory? Is there an easier way to track serial items?

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Our operation needs us to track serial numbers for warranty issues. We want to do it as the items are taken out of inventory for our computer builds. We have looked at assembly items and kits but neither records serial numbers until the item is purchased. We thought transfer in and out would allow us to transfer the items out to a computer build (with a unique serial number) and then transfer back in as a new item with that same computer number. Unfortunately, RMS isn't checking actual inventory for serial numbers. It allowed us to transfer out items multiple items with the same serial numbers and even items that weren't in inventory. Are you having the same type of problem?

We are trying to work around it by "selling" the items to a "customer" with a computer number. This allows us to get the items out of our inventory and begin tracking the serial numbers right away. This RMS process does check the serial numbers to make sure they are available and not duplicates. It's a bit awkward because we are tracking the computers as customers. It also ties up our POS scanning the items for computer builds. We're working with an RMS reseller to see if there are better work arounds available.
