Is anybody using Paymentech as their credit/debit card processor? Do you connect directly with Paymentech or are you using a middleware product such as Vital or TPI SmartPayment?

RMS will not connect directly to PaymentTech. I have a couple of customers using PaymentTech through PC Charge. Not sure if TPI will connect to them or not.

I'm reviewing the Retail ManagementSystem Integrated Merchant Services document and it states that no third party software is needed. ?? It's this document: LQFS-0000-PC00000 DATED 1/05 Can you shed some light on this? Thanks.

My last company used MerchantLink (our Gateway) to translate the data to ChasePaymentech. Is this what you are talking about? We did indeed need a 3rd party because we were not on Vital to get the info there.
OK, I still find this sort of confusing myself, so I'll probably use some poor terminology. Hopefully the thougt comes through...
There are 3 levels to card processing. There is a "terminal", a "Merchant Services Provider" and a "Processor"
Most banks can act as a "provider" and there are many many many companies that act solely as a provider. You can think of them as reselling the services of "processors".
"Terminals" are devices that send transaction requests (aka sales) to "processors". They may be either hardware or software. RMS can act as a terminal to communicate with a processor, but it only speaks Vital's language.
"Vital" is a processor. RMS can integrate directly with Vital as a processor. Many "providers" either use Vital as their preferred processor, or can offer them as an alternative. Alternative usually means higher cost, because the provider has not negotiated as good a rate as they have for their preferred processor.
"Paymentech" is also a processor. They compete with Vital and use different technology or formats ( exactly what those differences are is not important for this ) to communicate with terminals. RMS does not support their format. RMS does however integrate with PCCharge. PC Charge is a software based terminal that supports many different processors.
Now it gets confusing... "Paymentech Merchant Services" Is a "PROVIDER" who will sell you processing services. One of the processors they can use is Vital, and if your account is set up to use vital, then yes RMS will connect without any other software required.

TPI can connect direct to Paymentech for credit, debit, EBT, Gift & Check verification. You merchant?s rates will be lower if they connect direct to Paymentech versus going through another 3rd party like Vital to get to Paymentech.
RMS has native support for VisaK messages which can be processed by a front end like Vital. Mercury can handle this protocol also. Paymentech's main platform does not use this protocol, but Paymentech could set up a merchant using Vital as a front end. They'd typically prefer their own front end because they would have lower costs. So if you want to use Paymentech, you'd insist they set you up on Vital. Of course, they might want to charge differently....
Mercury Payment Systems has a front end specifically for RMS that handles Credit, debit and Gift transactions. We have thousands of installations running flawlessly on that.
You can also use third party payment applications like Pc Charge or TPI to add payment processing. You can get some additional features like EBT and additional pin pad support. The downside is an additional software cost and additional complexity to install and support.
