How to copy company data to fake company for expeimenting?

1 - I want to set up a 2nd company in my Quick Books and copy all my real company data...

This way I can try things before I actually do it in QB.

How can I do this?

And,

2 - Once done... how can I delete the fake company or it's data until I need to do it again?

(doing it each time means I have current data in the fake company and can see results that I can more accurately relate to the real company)

thanks for any help

Close Quickbooks..or at least the company file. From Windows Explorer locate the .qbw file for your company (default location is c:/program files/intuit/quickbooks). Right-click the file itself, select copy, right click again, select paste. This will create a second file with your company name but the word COPY in it.

If you're on a Mac use create duplicate from Finder.

Same method, just choose delete. You have to copy and/or delete Quickbooks files directly from their location, not through the program itself.

If you want to just keep it simple, open windows explorer, find the file (typically in C:\program files\intuit\quickbooks pro\ yourcompanyname.qbw) copy the file and paste it in another (or the same directory) name it something like thisisatest, qbw and open the file. Bang you have a duplicate company with all the data. Once the file is open I'd change the company name so I'd didn't inadvertently post any real data.. Easy to delete when you are finished.

When inside QB, chooe File | Open Company...

Right-click your company and choose Copy, then right click and Paste. Then open the Coay of... company.

As posted before, click File | Open Company Right click on "mycompany.qbw" Click Copy withouth moving the mouse click Paste

You will now have a new file called "Copy of mycompany.qbw" Double click on it and use it for your tests.

In order to avoid confusion, I highly recommend, before using this copy to got Company | Company Information and rename it to just a row of dashes or $ sings, etc.

When finished with your testing, click File | Open Company right click on :Copy of mycompany.qbw" and click delete.

It takes longer to type one line than to do the above. Try it. Arno

I've had, and heard of others having, data verification issues when using QB to copy files yet no issues when its done outside the program. That's why I didn't mention the program's ability to do this.

company data...

Tara, this well may be so with large QBW files but the very question of the OP tells me that he, like I, is dabbling around (accounting, that is) and, like I, may just cut out the middle man without ill effects. Your point, however, has been noted. Cheers, Arno
