off topic: just need help

I'm new to newsgroups. I have tried to find a newsgroup about the contact management program "Act! 6.0". I can find no reference anywhere. I also looked for any group containing the word "Canon", expecting to be inundated. Nothing. When I put in Quickbooks, this group came up.

What am I doing wrong? Surely there are newsgroups discussing ACT! as well as many discussing Canon products from cameras to copiers. Right?

Thanks to anyone willing to give a novice a bit of a leg up on finding newsgroups.

Best regards,

John

Doubt there are any groups specific enough to cover just canon products. You might find a group on office products, copiers, faxes etc. As for canon camera's I know there is not a group. There are a lot of photography groups under rec.photo.*

I'm sure there is an Act group. I don't use it so I don't have a clue, but look in the alt.comp.* groups and you should find it, just as you found this group in alt.comp.* You might also find it in the comp.databases.* groups.

Sometimes the find command is useless and you have to read down the page of all groups with your human eye to spot the synonyms.

Historians believe that in newspost on Sun, 16 Oct 2005, John Dorough penned the following literary masterpiece:

Firstly there may not be such newsgroups and secondly it depends upon your internet provider's news servers carrying such groups. There are probably over 100,000 newsgroups but in my experience most ISP servers only carry 40-50,000.

For Canon you will not find much, however there are general groups for any faxes and cameras.

Don't forget also to check out yahoogroups. You may also find via google or whatever that there are forums specific for ACT! rather than a newsgroup.

In addition to newsgroups, consider looking for website "discussion forums". These are more graphical, with an easier interface (if well designed), and more beginner-friendly (if well monitored and moderated). Many newer computer users rely on such forums instead of newsgroups. For example, I was also unable to locate a "Canon" newsgroup but I know a very active forum for Canon cameras at

Good find, Arno. Note to OP: Google, MSN, and Yahoo and similar "groups" are not "Newsgroups". At one time MSN referred to theirs as "Communities", though they are now "groups" - I guess because it's easier to spell and faster to type. It's been a long time since I looked at AOL but I presume theirs are still "forums". Most lesser hosts refer to them as forums, discussions, message boards, or similar terms.
