QB 2006 PC and Mac question

I'm going to be handling the accounts on a PC for a specialist Internet based group but my colleagues who are also involved with the running of this group are on Macs. Is it going to be possible for me to feed them my file from time to time so that they can put it onto a Mac version of QB 2006? This is really just as a safeguard should anything happen to me.

Many thanks

Sure... the QB Pro 2006 for Mac has capability to read/open PC QB databases. The Mac version also allows saving QB database in PC format... thus being able to move QB database between platforms... Jim

For file storage only its not an issue. Its not supposed to be an issue regardless but the Mac/PC versions of QB don't always play nicely together.

I have a file, created in QB for Mac years ago, never any issues, no bad data according to verify and rebuild but which is corrupt according to any Windows version of QB. QBP 2004 & 2005 can read and write to the file just fine, they just won't print checks. Trying to do so causes the program to crash. A message states that the data is in need of rebuilding yet verify finds no errors and it rebuilds without a problem..unless you consider the fact that QB still thinks it needs rebuilding.

The file is fine on the Mac version, I just can't *work* in it on Windows if I want to print checks. I believe that first transfer from Mac>Windows is what caused the problem. Anyway, now with versions 2006 on both platforms I can't even open the company file in the Windows version. It tells me the file is in need of rebuilding. I rebuild it then try to open and the same error pops up over and over, never actually *opening* the company file.

I'm going to copy and try to find time to work a another company file, created in Windows, on the Mac, then transfer and see if I still have problems when trying to actually work in the file. My long story is meant to illustrate that just because its supposed to work doesn't mean it will. If your Mac partners aren't going to work in the file then its a non-issue. If they might work in the file and send it back to you then I strongly suggest you do this several times (back & forth with updating of the file on both platforms) with a dummy file or copy of your real file to test for problems.

Have you actually and effectively worked the same file on both platforms? I've *yet* to get a hassle-free and completely workable QB to handle a dual-platform file originally created on a Mac.

yes... although not intensive 'cause I have no real need to involve PCs... other than for my tax person's usage at tax time. Also did some back and forth exchanges during beta testing. My testing appeared OK although I noticed that the recent QB for Mac 2006 R4 update addresses PC compatibility.

I agree with your other post... test, test and test again to ensure it works on your configuration before entrusting the process to valuable data.. Jim

Thanks Guys for the additional advise. In my case if anything happens to me I want to know that the others who are Mac based can carry on with the accounts though it would not be too much sweat to put them on a PC....most Mac people in my sort of business have such a thing in the office.

Cheers
