QB Premier 2010 - switching to multicurrency

The "multicurrency centre" doesn't help, and the help screens are useless - all help appreciated! We are based in the USA, with USD bank accounts.

95% of our business is in EUR (whee!). For years, we've kept parallel accounts in EUR and USD, laboriously translating them at the end of the year. I wanted to take advantage of QB multicurrency, with individual vendor prices. I bought a developer app which transfers transactions etc - BUT it will only do this between "companies" with the same primary currency. If I take our EUR accounts and set the primary currency to USD, all the accounts are switched to USD. Because there are balances, we can't change the currency (something the documentation didn't explain in advance!). All the help screens suggest is creating duplicate accounts and setting them to EUR - but all the figures are in the other set of accounts, in the wrong currency. Any ideas, please? This ought to be a standard situation, and one which Intuit considered in advance, but I haven't found anything helpful on the web so far ...
