Reports: Income by Vendor

Long time lurker - thanks to everyone for all the great advice - I have learned a lot in here. Now I find I have a question.



I am using QB Premier 2004. I would like to see a report of my sales by vendor. Specifically, my business is retailing items I buy from specific vendors wholesale, and I would like to see a report that breaks down my sales by "items" I have purchased from each vendor.



I can't seem to do this in this version of QB, although I have set up each "item" as being sold by each preferred vendor, and a price in each item according to the wholesale item cost.



I tried a workaround using the "rep" field, and assigning my vendors as "reps", then I could see a report by "rep", but that only shows the gross profit, not a net profit which is what I really need.



Am I not setting this up correctly - or is this a limitation on the report side and is there a newer version of QB that I should get that will accomplish this? Barring spending the money to upgrade QB, does anyone know of a different workaround I could use?

Set up a "Master Item" with each vendors name or a code that represents the vendor.. Then make each item sold by a particular vendor a sub-item of the master record. Then priont your repots and go like a bunny.

Sorry to reply to my own post, but just wanted to say a huge THANKS - this worked exactly as needed. And it gave me the added bonus of my items list being all neat and organized. I love it.

Now, how did you know this? Is it something you have come across before, a product of just intuition and experience, should I have RTFM, or bought a certain book, or taken a class? I just want to try and be able to figure these things out on my own without bothering everyone in here, and trying to determine what the best source is for the knowledge to do so.

I make my living as an accounting software consultant and have been doing so for 18 years. After a while these things become intutive. It just makes sense to me. Until you posed the question I did not have the answer.

You get an idea for a solution, test it out and hope you got it on the first try.
