Restore problem

I am trying to restore (as I do monthly) my QBB -- I back it up to a disk and restore it onto another hard drive to have 2 copies of my data. I am trying to restore it and I keep getting the message "the destination location you specified is invalid" -- it isn't. did I lose a core file or something?!?

I tried creating a new company and restoring the data to it -- it won't. The only thing I have not tried yet is uninstalling and then reinstalling the entire program.

Any thoughts on what I can do? Thanks!

Actually the procedure you mentioned results in 3 copies of your data not two.

Creating a new company and retoring to it makes no sense.

When in QB call up help and do a search on "Restore". There shoud be a help section on problems with restoring and possible solutions. Chances are quite slim that you lost a file.

Carefully examine the window that pops up showing the file on the disk and the restore to folder. A client of mine used to always forget this. I'd save the file, either .qbw or .qbb, to a usb flash drive then give it to him. His restore window would recall the settings from my machine rather than his own.

ie the file on my machine resided at c:/documents and settings/username/qb2004. On his machine it resides at c:/program files/intuit/quickbooks pro. He'd inadvertantly try to restore to the username/qb2004 folder from my machine rather than his own intuit/quickbooks pro folder because that's the info that stored in the file on the usb flash drive.

Failing that, try copying the .qbb file to the folder your .qbw file resides in rather than trying to restore from the disk.

The OP stated that the destination was valid.

I know but that doesn't mean the OP isn't a creature of habit and is assuming the destination reads correctly in the window because he knows the file exists. My client would swear up and down the destination was correct because he *knew* his file resided there. What he wasn't doing was paying attention to the fact that the destination path in the restore window itself had changed on him.

I agree with Tee. Double check the actual drive the backup/restore screen is looking for. It will remember the last one used even if that is on another machine. The box is not very big so you might have to put your curser on it and move to the end of the text to verify that the location is correct. I have been tricked a few times myself when moving bwt computers. Spelling also counts.

Seems like I have a much bigger problem -- my CD RW will not write -- So something else is really going on -- I will post back if I ever find out what the cause is!

Thanks for your posts -- Thanks for all the suggestions!
