simplifying the item dropdown list seen when entering invoices

Is there any way to simplify the list of items, services and assemblies, etc. that are seen on the dropdown list when a sales person is entering line items on an invoice? We sell only a few of the assemblies that we show in our list, the rest represent standard states of our work in progress. Likewise, many of our inventory items are not sold, but rather raw materials for our assemblies. The best I seem to be able to do is to sort my inventory items so that the sellable ones appear on the top of the list, near the services, but then the user has to page down through the rest of the non sellable items to get to the sellable assemblies, etc. Is there any way that I can either screen them out, or push them down to the bottom of the whole list?

I thought about inactivating non-sellable items, but then it's not available to make purchase orders, etc.

(Using QB enterprise Mfg/Wholesale edition 5.0) Any suggestions?

There is no "screening" alternative other than making them inactive. I think you're on the right track with sorting. Prefix the most-used items with "~" or "!" to make them float to the top, prefix the least-used with "Z" to make them sink to the bottom.

Thanks, I've been doing that, but the users still have to page through all the raw material items to get to assemblies because the primary sort is by TYPE. This seems like such an obvious problem for Intuit to have addressed long ago, don't you think?

Do they know they part number? If so, they can just start typing it and QB will start auto-filling as you type, you can either finish typing it, or after the first couple digits of part name/number click the drop down box and it will start from there. Although this will not help you if they do not know part #.
