Where is Inventory Assembly in New Item list??

1 - Adding a New Item to the Item List... I see "Inventory Part" in the new Item list BUT I don't see "Inventory Assembly"

I do have "Inventory and purchase orders are active" checked under Preferences | Purchahases & Vendors | Company Preferences

2 - Our products are not "parts" and are not "assemblies" - Can we create an item named "Inventory Item" or what ever ??

thanks for any help - tmb

From the help file: Building inventory assembly items This feature is available only in QuickBooks Premier and Enterprise Solutions editions so I guess you are out of luck if you are only using QB Basic.

You could simulate Assemblies by using "Group" instead. Once you have your indivdual items set up you can "group" them so that they show up together easily on invoices.

Inventory Parts are used for goods thatyou purchase, track as inventory and resell. Does that describe your product at all? Don't get hung up on the word "part".

What version [type, country, year] of QB are you using.

Assemblies are only available in Premiere and Enterprise.

There are 6 things that get on invoices [ignoring taxes]. A) Inventory parts B) Assemblies C) Services D) Other Charges E) Non inventory parts [but they really shouldn't, it should be an other charge] F) Groups

Here are a couple of examples to help you understand groups and assemblies:

You sell widgets. You buy them from Joe's widget manufacturing in bulk. You take 6 widgets and "assemble" them with a custom 6 pack box you buy from Sam's box company and shrink-wrap the box. You use an assembly consisting of 6 widgets and 1 box, because they are always sold as a unit. When a customer calls you need to know how many are assembled and ready for delivery, not how many bulk widgets you have. You also have a non inventory part of shrink-wrap film you get from Shrinkwrap-R-us.

You sell tires. You buy tires from Joe's rubber. You buy valve stems from Sam's valves. You buy wheel weights from Tom's lead weights. You have a group of tires, valve stems, wheel weights and a labor service charge. You use a group because on the invoice you can adjust the quantities individually for how many are used on each job.

Getting the idea on the difference?

Laura,

Thanks for the help.

For some reason in my versions of Quick Books Basic the Help file tells me we should have Inventory Assembly available... that is why I posted the question.

I looked to see if there was a disclaimer declairing the feature was not available in QB Basic.

Your advise to not get hung up on the QB description of an inventory item is a good one.

thanks again for the help.
