0 shares in quicken Scottrade account

On 3/7 I purchased 500 shares FRO. On 3/13 I sold 500 shares FRO. On 6/5 I shorted 500 shares FRO/ On 6/6 I covered 500 shares FRO. On the summary FRO shows up as 0 shares and expanding that heading shows the initial purchase and sale of 500 shares. Both sets of transactions show up in the full transactions view.

Why the 0 shares showing up?

TIA for any knowedge!

Hi, Bigbear.

Most likely rounding errors in the numbers of shares bought and sold. Always enter transactions in even dollars and cents paid and received, and in even numbers of shares. Let Quicken calculate the price per share, and don't worry if it is not exactly the right price because it doesn't affect anything else. Only the dollars and shares matter.

For a fuller explanation, see the Reply I just posted to the message just before yours, from snipped-for-privacy@gmail.com.

Click "Options" in the "Holdings" Title bar and make sure you don't have "Show closed lots" checked.

Thanks RC

BTW, I am using Q h&b 2007. It doesn't seem to be a rounding problem. All my Q entries are made on an a mostly daily basis by updates from the brokerages. I checked all the entries in question - the only ones that were from this year and tried to edit the entries but the price per share came out exactly the same. I also notice with mutual funds where there are many fractional entries, the shares are shown as exact. The FRO is shown as zero. When I tried to enter a present day sell 'all'. Strangely enough it wants to sell 500 shares!!!. When I go thru with that - lo and behold, I end up with - 500 shares in the summary! I am confused.

I also tried John's suggestion but I did not have show closed lots checked. When I did check it to see what would happen, nothing changed except a bunch more previous trades showed up greyed out.

Thanks much for the help - any other suggestions :(

the following response covers both suggestions I received.

Just guessing.

Try creating a "New" Quicken file, create one investment account to match the one you're having problems with. Enter the first two Buy/Sell transactions you reported (and I am assuming that - as RC suggested - your purchase is entered without a price/share) ... then check the Summary tab to see if the security is reported with zero shares (insuring that closed lots are not being reported).

If you see the same problem, I don't know what to tell you.

If you do not see the same problem, enter the second pair of Buy/Sell transactions (same caveats as above) and note the result.

If you see the same problem, I suspect there is a bug in the Quicken ESPP logic; though I have to say, while I have zero experience in this area, I do not recall anyone reporting experiencing this particular problem.

If you do not see the same problem in your "New" Quicken file: return to your regular Quicken data file and delete the original Sell, then Buy, transactions ... and re-enter them.

Backup before you attempt any change to your current Quicken data.

Thanks much John!

We're off for the weekend so I'll pick this up and try the suggestion on Monday and get back to you then.

Since I'm needing to correct my mistake (see below), while I'm here, I'll add that I tried to duplicate your problem with a regular Buy followed by a regular Sell ... and the security no longer appeared in the account Summary "Holdings" pane when "Show closed lots" was not checked ... and I can't think of any other reason for a straight Buy followed by a Sell of all shares to leave zero shares displayed other than R.C.'s suggestion or showing closed lots.

Hmmm; not sure what I was thinking here (maybe someone else was discussing ESPP purchases and sales and I got the two discussions mixed up). Clearly, you didn't say anything about ESPP transactions. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I think you can just sort of substitute the short-sell and cover transactions for the ESPP Buy/Sell mistake in my suggestion. [I don't have any experience with short sells and covers either. :) ]

An additional thought: in your current Quicken data, what does the "Holdings" pane show if you change its "As of" date to, say, March 14? How about March 6? (I'm presuming - guessing, really - that on both dates you actually held zero shares ... and wondering what Quicken says you held.)
