Security foul-up

Mar 01, 2008 3 Replies

(Now Q08Dlx on Vista Ult. 32-bit.)

PROBLEM: Qkn fails to recognize an existing security on weekly downloads from FI and in certain droplists.

Since Q06Dlx on Win2000Pro, Qkn fails to recognize certain securities exist and on new position and/or transaction downloads wants to pair up with "closest" security. When I chose ADD (only other option), Qkn recognizes existing security and won't proceed. I delayed trying to solve by accepting the download to a "new security" named [oldsecurityname + letter (i.e., a,b,c...)].

Today decided to solve by editing all transactions and placeholders individually and typing in [oldsecurityname], which does not appear on drop list. Then I deleted the extra [securities+letter] from the security list.

Now, as soon as I try to open an investment account, Qkn identifies [oldsecurityname] as something new, and I have had to use Task Manager to close Qkn, as there are only two options: pair with a "recognized" existing security or add as new, at which point it does recognize a security with same name.

SUGGESTIONS, PLEASE?????

Thanks

Al

I'm not sure I follow everything that you have done, so I may not have the answer you need. But I believe you can try my suggestion with impunity ... especially if you backup first.

Open the Security List and Edit the security that is not being correctly matched to. Uncheck the box labelled "matched with online security".

The next time you download (it may require that there be a downloaded transaction for the security in question, I forget), you should get another opportunity to select an existing Quicken security to match, and the security that is no longer "matched with online security" should be in the list to match to.

Thanks, John. I'll try it and post back. I seem to remember the subject coming up several times over the years, but couldn't find in NG nor Quicken forum looking for "combining securities", "duplicate securities", etc.

Follow up, as promised....

First off, should have pursued issue in NG and make SURE I understood what to do way back then. This has been an epic of brute force.

  1. After backing up Qkn file, I followed John Pollard's suggestion, marking all the "different" securities (i.e., Co. A, Co. A a. Co. A b, etc.) as not matching online security.
  2. Did a Security Detail View on each security and variant to identify transaction dates and accounts involved.
  3. Manually changed security names from "variant" to "original security" in every account involved.
  4. Deleted Placeholders in all accounts still mentioning variants.
  5. Tried to delete variants in Security List, and Qkn refused, indicating additional transactions must be first dealt with.
  6. Queried NG for showing hidden placeholders and found a thread where John Pollard mentioned how to go about it.
  7. Following John's suggestion I marked Investment Transaction preferences so as to show hidden transactions. In Qkn Dlx 08R6 it's "Edit>Preferences>Quicken Program>Investment Transactions>Show hidden transactions".
  8. Deleted every variant placeholder previously hidden (basically showing placeholder for "+0" shares of variant.
  9. Deleted all variants in Security List.
  10. Did another backup.
  11. Tried to check Holdings in first account involved (Online Center >

Holdings > "Account involved" > Compare to Portfolio), but on selecting "account involved", got Qkn asking about one of the securities, not recognizing it in security list. RESOLVED BY USING TASK MGR TO GET OUT OF QKN.

  1. Tried to do a new download from FI, and when I clicked on one of the accounts involved, Qkn again tries to set up a security that's there but is not recognized until you choose to go ahead, and, again, either one uses Task Mgr or must set up as "security variant".

Any suggestions ??

Thanks\ AL .
