- Help - adding New 401(K) Security not working in Q2006

OK, I recently upgraded to Q2006. I just tried to add a new security to my 401(k). It used to be easy in earlier versions. After much searching, the help file said to "update 401(k) holdings" (which turns out is a lot of effort and much more work than I need...I don't track with statements, I track with the web page).

Anyway, when I reached a point where I could add a new security I did. All it asked for was a name...the help file said it would prompt me for the rest of the info... but it never did.

So after I finished the update I went to the account and tried to edit the details, but the ticker block was grayed out. Without that, I can't get price updates. Gotta have that.

What did I do wrong? I backed it up just before the update and restored after it didn't work right, so I get to do it again, correctly I hope.

What version did you convert from and how were your 401k accounts defined there?

Unless there was some problem caused by the conversion, I don't understand why you would have had to take the actions you took.

I don't understand why you took the "Update 401k holdings" route; as far as I know, that is only useful if your fi does not report share balances, and even then, probably not necessary.

I have managed a couple of 401k accounts for someone else, and I have never used the Update Holdings wizard. "Adding" a "new" security to a 401k account has never been any different for me than "adding" a security to a non-401k account; I "Buy" it. If the security does not already exist in the Security List, Quicken offers to add it to the list during transaction entry, and Quicken allows me to enter the ticker in the process of adding the security to Quicken. But if I fail to enter a ticker during this process (or if I get it wrong), I can just go to the Security List, Edit the security, and assign it the correct ticker.

Thanks for responding!

I converted from Q2003 where I originally built the 401(k) account. I had several individually managed mutual funds before I started my

401(k) that were added easily enough. The 401(k) was a bit tougher as each security was linked to that account with a single cash balance...took a while to figure it out but once I did adding securities was a snap. Now my fund manager has bought a yet new security, the first after my "upgrade". Previously it was as simple as finding a command "add new security" within the 401(k) account. I could add the security and the ticker symbol at that time. As for entering data, I have never bothered to download them but entered them manually. Was never that hard.

With Q2006, the command to add a new security has either been removed or very well hidden. The Q2006 help file said to "update 401(k) holdings" (not my idea so no I don't understand that either), and yes, it forced me to input all kinds of data that I could find online easily enough (schwab.com), and then at some point it showed a complete list of my securities and a button to add a new one. It asked for a security name (only) and then pressed on. No other info was asked for. At the completion of the update, it showed up in the list of securities, but the box to add the ticker was inaccessible when I tried to edit the security..

Please describe the method you alluded to about "buying" a security you have not yet set up...I could not figure that one out
