Activating Quicken?

I've been using Quicken for a long, long time and just upgraded to Quicken Deluxe 2011. I purchased the program on Quicken's own Web site, downloaded it and installed it on top of Q2008 without a hitch.

Now did I, once upon a time, have to activate or unlock or register Quicken in order to get it to work, or is mere posession of the CD or installation file all the proof that's needed?

I'm just curious what I'd have to do to get things back on the air if I migrate to a new machine or have to do a major recovery of this one.

I'm sure I knew this once, but ...

Sa far as I know, they just want registration for statistics.

I registered mine each time to avoid the nag screen. But even when uninstalling and reinstalling on the same or another machine when getting a new laptop, I never hit a limitation or whatever.
