Backup Frequency

Hello: I realize that this subject has been on this web site several times, but I am having difficulity setting it up. Please assist? We use 2003 QW Deluxe, I want to stop the automatic backup & will do it manually. I go to the edit menu of the quicken program and find two items:

1: Remind after running quicken, choice 0 to 99 2: Max. number of backup copies choice 1 to 5

Neither one will do what I want it to. As I mentioned Please assist me to remove the automatic function if possible. Thank-You in advance!!!

Given only the information in your post, since 0 is an allowed answer and 0 makes no sense in "Remind me after running Quicken 0 times", 0 must mean "no automatic backup". It costs nothing to try it.

I interpreted this flag as turning off the reminder that you should backup your files. It has no effect on the automatic backup feature. Considering the size of hard drives these days and the usefulness, I don't see why anyone would want to turn this off...... You can never have too many backups, IMNSHO.....

I am not sure why you do not want *any* automatic backups by Quicken; they can't hurt and they may help ... especially should you forget to do your manual backup, or should your manual backup turn out to be corrupted. The backups do not consume much disk space, and there will never be more filesets than you specify in "Max number of backup copies". (If you specify a max of 1 backup copy, Quicken will overwrite the one backup fileset everytime it does its automatic backup).

Having made my pitch for the notion that "you can't have too many backups"; I can tell you what you can try ... I can't guarantee it will work.

I do not have Q2003; for Q2004, the value for "Max number of backup copies" is stored in C:\WINDOWS\QUICKEN.INI (and I suspect that is the same for Q2003). It is located in the section headed by [Quicken], and its name is "AutoCopy". If you change the value for "AutoCopy" to zero (using something like NotePad or WordPad), and save the QUICKEN.INI file, the number zero will stick ... that is, if you then start Quicken and look at the "Max number of backup copies", it will say zero (do not try to modify any other value in that dialog box, or Quicken will complain about the zero ... just click "Cancel" to close the dialog box). Make a backup of your QUICKEN.INI file before trying this and plan to return to it if you have any problems.

You will have to wait perhaps seven days or so to determine whether the setting is working ... unless Quicken complains earlier when it trys to make an "automatic" backup. If you can go more than 7 days or so without seeing any new auto backups, I think the change will have worked.
