Bill pay with Financial Institution that supports Direct Connect

I am using a Financial that supports both account updates and Bill Payment directly, without Quicken Bill Pay.

I have successfully set up a test Moneyspire account, imported my 10 years of Quicken data and written checks on my bank via direct connect from Moneyspire Windows 10 desktop. Billpay setup was a breeze. I provided my Financial Institution credentials, responded to my Financial Institution that the connection was authorized through a cell phone transaction and it was done! Certainly nothing like to Quicken 18 maze!

Quicken Premier 18 broke Billpay (among other things) and now requires a ridiculous setup process before the "free" can be used.

Is there a way that Quicken can, without Quicken Billpay which I currently pay for to use with my Quicken Premier 2017, use direct connect for bill payment? I can only find Quicken Billpay in Quicken setup for my account

While there are things in the UI of Moneyspire that I think could be better, it's implementation of consistent Windows UI operations says a lot for it.

I have not gotten into any Investment activities with Moneyspire yet so cannot comment on that. The banking and Credit Card sections look solid and are very fast.

I may make the change.... I have 22 days left in my Moneyspire trial to decide to buy or not.

If the financial institution supports Online Bill Payment using the Direct Connect connection method, you should be able enable the functionality in Quicken by opening the payment register, pressing Ctrl

  • Shift + E, selecting the "Online Services" tab and "Set up now..." in the Online Bill Payment region. You may need to authorize the use of the Online Bill Payment functionality with your financial institution.

As I said in my original message I have verified that the Financial Institution Supports Online Billpay using Moneyspire. When I look at the Online services Tab for the account it shows Quicken Billpay. How do I change that to use Direct Connect with Quicken? I would like to drop the $9.95/Mo Quicken Billpay. I have tried Quicken Premier 2018 and the change process to activate the "free" Quicken Billpay is a nightmare. With Moneyspire all that I had to do was set up my login credentials and verify my identity with text sent to my cell phone listed on the account. Amazing how easy it can be!

You have not verified that the financial institution supports Online Bill Payment using the Direct Connect connection method. If you do not want to mention the name of the financial institution, you may examine the FIDIR.TXT file Quicken downloads yourself. If the financial institution supports Online Bill Payment, the "PAYMENT" option will be included for the financial institution. Even if the "PAYMENT" option is specified, you may need to authorize the use of the Online Bill Payment functionality with your financial institution.

My bank supports Online Bill Payment using Direct Connect for CERTAIN CLASSES OF ACCOUNTS. They also have an 800 number dedicated to Online issues and can help with Quicken. Try giving them a call and tell them what you are trying to do and if you have to have a certain class of account. I stopped using Quicken Bill Pay over 10-15 years ago and use my bank's Bill Pay instead. Everything downloads into Q2017 Deluxe with no problem.

You seem not to understand.

It does not matter what happens in Moneyspire or any other non-Quicken product: if the financial institution does not accept online bill pay instructions from QUICKEN, you can not use Online Bill Pay in Quicken with that financial institution (you would have to use Quicken Bill Pay). The financial institution can even accept online bill pay instructions from Quicken for Windows but not from Quicken for the Mac, if they choose.

And when the financial institution does accept online bill pay instructions from Quicken, that will be apparent when you click the "Set up now" button on the Online Services tab of the Edit Account Details dialog for the account, when the account is activated for Direct Connect downloads.

If the account is not setup for Direct Connect, you can't use Online Bill Pay for that financial institution in Quicken. If the financial institution does not accept bill pay instructions from QUICKEN, you can not use Online Bill Pay for that financial institution in Quicken.

The financial institution controls this 100%: they determine whether to offer Direct Connect to Quicken users; they determine whether to accept online bill pay instructions from Quicken users.

The Quicken file FIDIR.TXT on my 2017 Premier installation includes the word "PAYMENT" for my Financial Institution. It is my understanding that this indicates that billpay is supported through Direct Connect. The account is currently set up using Quicken Bill Pay which I want to drop. There is no "Setup" tab (perhaps because the account is already configured. Perhaps I need to delete account and reconfigure.

Your posts in this discussion are a lesson in unfathomable inconsistency.

Example: "The account is currently set up using Quicken Bill Pay which I want to drop. There is no "Setup" tab ....".

If there is no "Online Setup" tab in the "Edit Account Details" dialog for the Quicken account, then the QUICKEN account can NOT now be setup for downloading, thus can not be setup for Online Bill Pay or Quicken Bill Pay.

If you have agreed to PAY either "Quicken Bill Pay" or your financial institution to accept bill pay instructions, and you want to discontinue paying for that service; you need to contact the bill payer to accomplish that.

Deactivating a Quicken account does not discontinue any obligation you have made to pay a fee for bill paying for that account ... which Quicken tells you when you deactivate such an account.
