I broke down and bought Q2008 after all; thinking that the 'new' method of tagging transactions might hold some interest. I do mess around the categories and classes, so I thought perhaps this might be one area in Q2008 that holds promise for me.
One thing I immediately notice is that the categories list no longer shows you the number of transactions that each categories has associated with it without having to click on the minireport that is available now - and at that, it's one a time ; not the entire set (with scrolling) one had before. The other thing that I don't like is the 'Show Unused Categories' filter. In that panel, it's not immediately obvious (like it was in Q2007) that if you have are using some categories like A:B:C and A:D:E even if you don't singularly use category A, but indeed have sub transactions (B, C, D, and E in the example), then it appears that you can simply delete category A and take all the others below it without realizing it. Q tells you that category A is not being used - strictly speaking, that's true, but it should have some indicator like there are valid children below it. Yes, I know that it asks you if you wish to merge the subcategories, but one shouldn't have gotten that far.
Anyone else bothered by this? That panel seems a large step backwards from what Q2007 had.
