Quicken 2008 R3 available

Release 3 already, does anyone remember such a rapid series of updates? I'm struggling with a "Scheduled Bills & Deposits" bug that doesn't allow me to choose most accounts, and once chosen, cannot be changed. Let's see if R3 cures this :-) Bob

Not surprised. Quicken's own website needs to catch up as well. They still say that QW 2007 is their latest edition.

2007), plus the prior two versions, will be supported, subject to certain exceptions."

Duh.

Current users of QW 2005 have until about next April 2008 to upgrade. Anyone want to take bets on what revision they will be up to by then?

Just wanted to mention that R2 had nothing to do with any bug fixes; it was purely about increasing the degree of security (and unlike any other release of any version of Quicken I know of, data that has been processed by R2 can never be processed by R1).

John:

Good point about R2. I forgot to add that my workaround for the Scheduled Transaction bug is to

1) Enter a transaction as I want it memorized. 2) Memorize the transaction as Scheduled. 3) Delete the "dummy" transaction.

Don't blame me: I as much as said that anyone with an older version of Quicken who ran out and bought Q2008 was a sucker for punishment.

Quicken who ran out and bought

Spending money unnecessarily for things like new Quicken every year is one reason why YOU are still working and I was able to retire from full-time employment at 42. Go ahead and buy the newest edition of everything every year and you will have NO choice but to work until you drop dead.

I couldn't find official release notes, but this is an OCRed version of a screen capture of what Quicken popped up when I said "Tell me more" on the upgrade notification:

Quicken 2008 Release 3 Notes Address Book ? Fixed an issue where the payee and memo Field for some transactions that use payees from the address book were changed to N/A. lmage Attachment . Resolved a defect where encrypted images were not able to be viewed. Printing ? Fixed a problem where voucher checks would print 3 decimal places on the printed voucher check. Crash Reports ? Resolved the top program crash reported by Quicken customers.

I couldn't get the update to complete on Vista Ultimate (x86). When I try, it pops up a dialog saying:

"Quicken 2008 Update Utility

The update for Quicken 2008 was not completed.

Reason: A patching engine error has occurred."

I'll have to see if I can find the patch and run it with various privileges.

Hi, David.

You may recall that I had a very traumatic experience in trying to update Quicken 2007 to R3 on my Vista Ultimate x64 back in January. After a long thread, reporting my troubles and getting help from John Pollard and others, I finally got it done and summarized my final solution in a post where I reported this:

I was able to patch to Release R3. So I'm all up to date now.

Note that the key executable is the "generic" one, which located and installed the R3-specific patch file

For the whole sad thread, see if you (or Google Groups) can find it. The Subject: Quicken 2007 Revision 3 is ready - but won't install for me; started by me on 1/5/2007, with that final solution posted on 1/13/07.

Please report how this works out for you in Q2008.

On the subject of Vista, it seems Microsoft is somewhat admitting defeat and allowing "downgrades" to XP:

And so the tax planner is still a piece of crap? Perfect. Thanks, Intuit.

RC,

Thanks. That got it. All I had to do was go to:

C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Quicken\Inet\Common\patch\Update,

right-click on QWPATCH.EXE and run it as Administrator. Everything completed fine. I'm wondering, though, if Intuit even tested this update process on a Vista machine. Maybe we're supposed to manually download these patches every time and run them as Administrator. If so, they need to add that to their instructions or disable the automatic update process on Vista machines.

Hi, David.

Great! Thanks for the post back with the details. That should help jog our memories the next time the question come up.

I wondered that, too. And that is one of the reasons that I'm likely to get Q2008 in a few days. When Q2007 hit the streets, Vista was still in beta and 6 months from final release, so Intuit had half an excuse. MAYBE they've heard of Vista by now. ;^}

I know I am reporting this late (had to go to work today ). I tried 2 or 3 times to do the upgrade on my slow-as-molasses Acer 3680 laptop running Vista home basic. Got the same error as David. Then I rebooted (machine is faster now thanks to boottime defrag with PerfectDisk), and ran Quicken and the upgrade before the machine was fully booted. Then the upgrade worked!!

RC: Thanks for the path to the patch.exe

LOL, yes and I have heard you are worth a million or so. whoopee!

I do appreciate you for giving me a date I that will drop dead. Looks like it will be in 2013 when I will take an early retirement. This information will help when I update my estate plan next year.

As far I can tell, I am about 12 - 13 years younger then you based on your past postings to this newsgroup.

My net worth is about three times your stated worth. I am fully vested in my 401(k) which has grown an average 20% of your state worth per year since

2002 (this includes my contributions). 6% is invested in the company I work for so I am fairly diversified. I have made the maximum allowable contributions since the plan was offered. Only one year I did not make the maximum contributions - the year I bought my first house.

I have both a Roth and Conventional IRA and a brokerage account. I have a company paid pension that is fully vested (fully funded by the company) and have accumulated enough work time to have fully paid medical when I retire. The cash out option on my pension is about 1/3 of your stated worth. It is unlikely these benefits will change as they represent a very small percent of my company's overall benefit package based on a discussion I had with our CEO.

I have a house worth about your stated worth (a 30% unrealized gain) with

86% equity based on its present market value. The mortgage will be paid off in six years. So far, the market value of the house has held up although real estate is taking longer to sell in my neighborhood. I drive a 05 Civic Hybrid and 96 Saturn - those being the only new cars I have ever purchased. I paid cash for both of them.

Its not to say that I haven't made mistakes - Lucent, Enron, Compaq and I even lost money in a real estate investment in 1993. I have learned from these mistakes and I hopefully will not repeat them.

So, sharx35, an upgrade of Quicken will not put me into the poor house. Unless there is a major collapse in the world's economy I should do just fine.

I've got to go to plan my funeral now.
