CD/DVD Backup

Before others jump, let me state you've given us readers absolutely NOTHING to work with here.

My first question - did you put a CD or DVD in your computer and close the drive? (My point is it's like going to a doctor and saying "I don't feel well, what's wrong?")

You didn't say what your problem was, what version of Q or Windows/MAC you're working with, any error symptoms or messages, etc etc etc.

More details man! And by the way,.although I've never had your problem, did you Google the archives and read the MYRIADS of posts about this problem that others have had over the years for what might be the same problem? Many (but admittedly not all) problems that people have had with Q have already been discussed here and a solution (or workaround, or just a 'live with it' reply) has already been offered.

Sorry about the vague question. Let's see if I can get this right.

Running Vista on a Dell Inspiron 530, with Quicken 2007 Basic. When attempting to backup Quicken banking, and putting a blank, formatted DVD-RW into the CD-RW/DVD-RW drive, and clicking Backup in the Quicken program, I keep getting error messages such as Error: Not Backed Up; Can't Read Disk; etc. . . . however, I CAN backup to the external hard drive and also a flash drive using this procedure.

Is there something I'm missing about backing up to a CD-RW or DVD-RW disk?

Go to Google and do an 'Advance Search' in the GROUPS (not the WEB) section. Use keywords like 'CD Backup' and restrict your search to groups that have the following argument "*.quicken". You should get back a LOT of old posts that might help you - as I said earlier, this has been a topic that's been discussed many times. For example, here is one thread from 6/7/2007 that help = but again, there are many others!

Backup to CD changed for Q2007. Here is what Intuit has to say.

In order to back up directly to CD, your CD burning software must support packet writing. Issues backing up to CD are generally due to the software you use not supporting packet writing, incorrect configuration of your burning software or incorrect formatting of your CD. If you know how to format your CD and configure your software to support packet writing, you can back up to CD directly from Quicken. If you don't know how to do this, either consult the documentation for your CD burning software to learn how or use a workaround to back up to CD. The workaround can be found at

Thank you John. I am using Roxio's Easy Media Creator, and as far as I know, it supports packet writing. I have no problems with any other software. It seems to me, that this is just a bloody minded change just for the sake ot it.

I'll see if I can live with the workaround. If not, I'll revert to the previous version, and abandon any future upgrades.

George, I've had the same problem with Q 2004. It worked when I installed it, but it stopped working after one of the updates. I backed off the updates, and it worked as long as I didn't reinstall it.

When I upgraded to Q2007, I had the same problem again. Quicken support was pretty useless. Reluctantly, I installed "Karen's Replicator". This is free software, available on the Internet. It turned out easier, and more reliable than Quicken's backup, and I've used it ever since. Just Google "Karen's Replicator" and you should have backups working within a half hour.

I use a destination folder description of

E:\Quicken Backup\ \

This creates a new folder based on the date, each time I perform a backup.
