Change sounds?

Just installed 2007 over 2004 and went very smooth. All data converted, etc. However, I want to change the sound when opening up the register. In Sound properties there is no listing for Quicken. Even looked in the ini file, but found nothing. How do I create a new scheme for Quicken in Sound and Media through control panel?

Hi, pigiv.

Nothing you can do in Control Panel will bring Quicken into Sound Properties if it is not there already. You will need to edit the Registry to get Quicken into the Sounds menu. This is not a new problem; it has been around since Windows 2000 and the question - and solution - has been posted here many times.

You haven't told us whether you are running Win9x, WinXP, Vista - or something else.

Several years ago, I created a .reg file to put Quicken into the Sounds menu. Here is the latest version, QSoundsVista.txt. As the name suggests, it's for Vista, but it should work for WinXP as well. It's a .txt file. After you edit it to fit YOUR computer, save it (or rename it) as a .reg file, then double-click on it to merge it into your Registry. You probably will not need to change anything except the pathname to the Quicken folder on your computer; on mine, it is E:\QuickenW. (Note that in the .reg file that needs to be "E:\\QuickenW\\...")

After successfully adding these keys to HKU\.DEFAULT, you should be able to follow Jim's instructions and see Quicken in your list of programs in the Sounds menu in Control Panel.

Let us know if this works for you. And be sure to specify which version of Windows you are running.

Hi, Jim.

Correct. Except...

OFTEN, after installation of Quicken, this menu does not include a listing for Quicken at all! This has been an ongoing problem for several years now, ever since Windows 2000 introduced new security features, as I recall. As a one-man, one-computer kind of guy, I've never had to learn much about User Accounts and permissions and such, so I don't fully understand how to avoid the problem. But somewhere in the process of Installing Quicken as an Administrator or as a normal Power User, the Quicken Sounds settings don't get written properly into the .DEFAULT part of the Registry. Thus, there are no sounds in Quicken. And when the user navigates to the Sounds menu - as you quite properly instructed - there is only a blank wall where Quicken should be.

See my Reply to the OP for some details - and a fix.

Whoops! Forgot to attach the file. The .ansi.txt extension is because my ISP's mail server won't let me attach a binary file. Just change the name to QSoundsVista.reg after you've edited it to fit your computer.

Just musing.

Intuit has long said that Quicken should only be installed by

*the* administrator; I wonder how many of the folks having the sound problem installed Quicken as a user with administrative rights, instead of *the* administrator?
