Hi, Archie.
No. NOT in Quicken.ini.
The .wav files contain the actual "music", which is played at the appropriate times. These files for Quicken are stored in the Sounds subfolder of your Quicken folder. The exact path depends on the organization of YOUR computer. Yours may be in C:\Program Files\Quicken\Sounds\qclick.WAV. Mine is E:\QuickenW\Sounds\qclick.WAV, and there are 39 *.WAV files there, including 19 qopen*.WAV files. (I don't see the qstart_2000.WAV file that Jim mentioned, but I have qopen_2000.WAV, which may be the one he meant.) In Windows Explorer, I can play any one of them in Windows Media Player simply by clicking on it.
Now, you need a way to tell Windows to tell Quicken which .WAV file to play whenever you click something. This also is NOT in Quicken.ini, but in the Windows Control Panel. To get to the Control Panel in Vista, I click Start | Control Panel | Sound. Here I see 3 tabs: Playback, Recording and Sounds. On the Sounds tab there is a "Program" window. The first item in the program window is Windows itself, and the list is quite long. After that, there are listings for other Windows features, such as Windows Explorer, Speech Recognition and Photo Gallery.
There MAY also be a listing in Program for Quicken, but sometimes Quicken's Setup program fails to make the proper entries in the Windows Registry and Quicken does not appear in this list at all. :>( Ever since about Windows
2000, we've had many Quicken users report this problem. The fix is a small .reg file that I wrote long ago (and have posted here several times) to create those Registry entries. If you don't see Quicken in the Program box in Control Panel | Sound | Sounds, please post back and I'll find my .reg file in the archives and post it again.
If you DO see Quicken in the list, then all you have to do is look under the Quicken heading to see the seven events that can trigger a sound, such as Delete, Memorize or Record. Click any of these and then look in the "Sounds" box below to see which .WAV sound is set to play for that event. The default for Delete, for example, is qdelete.WAV. There's a convenient "Test" box there so you can play that .WAV file to hear the sound. If you don't like it, or want to choose a different one, just click in the Sounds menu and browse until you find one you like.
We use the Control Panel to choose from the files in the Quicken\Sounds folder. It's easy to choose a different .WAV file, or to delete some from the folder, or even to add more .WAV files if we have some. But if we want to change the .WAV file itself, then we'll have to use some program (such as Audacity) outside Quicken for that.
