Hi, Quicken Users.
Just about every time we have to install a new Quicken - or re-install it after updating to a new Windows - we find that Quicken Sounds have gone silent. The "Turn on Quicken Sounds" in Edit|Preferences doesn't help. And when we try to use Windows Control Panel's Hardware and Sounds|Sounds|Sounds tab, we see that Quicken is not listed there at all. To get Quicken into the Sounds menu, we must edit the Registry. In 2003, Burke Mamlin posted a fix, which I've copied and updated several times as new versions of Windows appeared. My latest version, QSoundsWin8.reg.txt, is attached.
You can load this .txt file into Notepad and edit it as required to fit YOUR system, as explained in comments at the top of the file text. When you have finished your edits, just save the file as QSoundsWin8.reg - without the .txt extension. Close Quicken and then click on the .reg file. The next time you start Quicken, you should hear the Startup sound (QOpen.wav).
BEWARE! When you click on a .reg file, Windows immediately writes that file's contents into your Windows Registry! There is no "Are you sure?" prompt and there is no Undo button for this. It works for me; it should work for you, but use it at your own risk.
