First, look in Program Files\Quicken\Sounds to see if the program installed the wav files to your hard drive. Then check the sounds applet in control panel to see if they have been added there. Mine are at the bottom of the list under a section called "Quicken". There are only 7 entries listed for my PC. If they are missing here, then you will need to add them manually.

This problem has been recurring ever since Windows 2000 introduced new security rules, which become an issue when installing any application - especially Quicken, it seems. Laura's advice is good, but there's one more step that has to be done before those steps will work.

If you go to Control Panel | Sound | Sounds (in Vista Ultimate - there will be slight variations if you are using a different Windows version), you will see menu selections for sounds in Windows, Windows Explorer, Windows Photo Gallery, etc. - but probably NOT for Quicken. To get Quicken sounds into that menu, you will have to either reinstall Quicken - as THE Administrator - or edit the Registry.

I am attaching the .txt version of a .reg file that I've updated from earlier (Win2K and WinXP) versions to work in Vista. This one is customized for MY system, which has Quicken installed in my E:\QuickenW folder. You probably will need to edit it by using Notepad's Edit | Replace function to change all occurrences of "E:\\QuickenW" to "C:\\Users\\" to reflect your own Username ("jhewitt", or whatever you use). After editing this .txt file, save it and change the extension to .reg. When you are sure it's correct, right-click the filename (in Explorer) and click Merge. This will add Quicken to Vista's Sounds menu; you can edit the specific sounds (Open Program, Click, etc.) if you don't like the defaults.

Please post back and let us know how this works for you. Be sure to tell us your Windows version.

Yup, your'e both correct the sounds are not in Control Panel | Sound | Sounds.

Laura doesn't say how to get the sounds into that location.

I'm not going to re-install Quicken, similar re installations and upgrades have caused data loss in the past.

RC Maybe I'm not to smart, but I can't see that txt version in your posting, or the references. Can you help me to find it please?

The file QSounds.txt is attached this time.

Maybe it's just as well because I was planning to send the later QSoundsVista.txt before. But your latest post says you are using WinXP Pro, so this file ought to do it for you.

If it doesn't work, let us know so that I can edit it. I haven't actually used it in a few years.

Your txt file points to the E drive. Does that need to be changed to C: or what ever drive the quicken program is installed?

And note that the Registry file needs the double \\ in its pathnames. The "C:\\Users\\" format is for Vista. John probably should change all occurrences of "E:\\QuickenW" to "C:\\Program Files\\Quicken", but he should be sure that is the right pathname for his own Quicken folder. Since I've not used WinXP in over a year, and since my Quicken location was non-standard, you might be better able to tell him what the replacement string should be.

Thank you for repeating your instructions. I forgot that you had included them the other day.

On my XP machine the location is C:\Program Files\Quicken\Sounds.

I am assuming that one should also verify that the sound wave files are on the computer before doing the registry changes. Usual caveats apply. ...
