Confused About COPY and BACKUP

After at least two decades of using Quicken, I remain confused about the distinction between COPY and BACKUP (BU). It was never an issue until I recently began using the Vista machine I hate instead of my Windows XP machine. When the XP developed a problem a few months ago, I placed a BU copy of my Q2008HB data file on the Vista machine then simply turned the Vista's Q2008HB program to the BU data file and loaded it; no RESTORE. In fact, I've never used RESTORE.

I noticed no difference and everything seemed to come through with the right balances and all functions appeared to work properly. The Vista machine is a 64 bit machine; the XP is not. There's a Western Digital World Book Edition II on this network backing up the files of both of these machines. That's another thing I need to figure out 'cause I sure don't know how to get a file off there either.... properly.

I now want to switch back to the XP machine. Can I just find my most recent data BACKUP on the Vista machine and turn my XP copy of the program to the location and load it?

Yes. The files are independent of the Windows version. I use the same files for XP, Vista, and Windows 7 on different machines.

I just transfer my working set of files to the new computer. There are 4 or 5 files that all begin with {yourfileset} in the \Intuit folder.

OR you can transfer a BACKUP copy and RESTORE it on the XP. I would make a fresh BACKUP copy and use it so that you know that it is a current set of data.
