Deleting Stock Transactions

I have a very big fiel (45 megs) and most of my tranactions are security buys and sells. I've been doing this for a couple of years and could easily archive the file and then delete early transactions. For example, as of the beginning of this year (2005) I could look at my portfolios, find the earliest buy in the portfolio on 1/1/05 and delete all the transactions prior. Is that a problem?

It will throw all your holdings out of kilter.

If you have held a security for a long time and then try to sell it, Quicken will look to see where that security is to sell. If you've deleted the transaction, in Quicken's infinite wisdom, you've done a short sale.

If you really want to delete the old security holding info, you must make sure that the security has been sold and "zeroed" out.

My recommendation is to deal with the large file and keep your history. If you need to, validate your file and possible "super validate" it to remove all of the extraneous space.

Actually, do a Quicken "Copy" to remove that extra space.

Thanks John. I knew there was a simpler way too.

Thanks everyone. Just to make it clear, I would delete only "closed" transactions and securities. But, perhaps you're right ...deal with it! The file does seem to get a bit screwed up from time to time and I can't figure out why.

Thanks
