FYI: New Quicken Quotes Server

For those who have not already heard, Intuit says they have a new quotes server and they have invited Quicken Forum registrants to check it out. I don't see why Intuit would mind if those who aren't registered there were also to give it a try, so here are Intuit's instructions for doing that.

1.. Open the Quicken.ini file found in Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\Quicken\Config. If they are using Windows Vista, then the location is ProgramData\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\Quicken\Config 2.. In the section [INTERNET] add the following lines sun= qwvip.quicken.com

moon= qwvip.quicken.com

3.. Save the Quicken.ini file. Quicken will need to be restarted if is currently running. 4.. Quicken will use the new server when you do a One Step Update or use Download Quotes in the Portfolio View.

Thanks for the information but....

There is no [INTERNET] section in the file and, it's not Quicken.ini, it's QUSER.INI. I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit with Quicken 2008.

I added an [INTERNET] section and there seems to be absolutly no difference of any kind?

I'm not sure what version of Quicken (or Windows) you are running, but for Q2008 and Q2009 on Windows XP, there is a Quicken.ini (in addition to QUSER.INI): it's just where Intuit said it would be.

I had no trouble finding the file, and it does contain an "[INTERNET]" section.

Make sure you looked in the "All Users" folder and not in the folder for your Windows user (which is where QUSER.INI resides for Q2008 and Q2009 under Windows XP).

If you're using Vista, I can't provide any further assistance, but perhaps others here using Vista can help.

Given where you put the changes, this result doesn't surprise me.

It's in the Program Data folder. I sabatoged myself by logging off and back on to the administrator account and forgot I'd never set Windows Explorer to show "hidden files and folders" and "show protected files" in the administrator account! Had I remained in the user account I would have found it right away.

Having made the changes and logged back in to the user account it's still made no difference as far as I can tell. I was hoping it might fix the permanent error trying to download a Chase Visa account but no such luck.

Error: "The CC-580 error occurs because of an error on the Quicken server. All server errors are resolved by the Quicken team within 2 to 3 business days. There is no action you can take to resolve this error. If you need to update your accounts immediately, you can use an alternate update method. You should use this alternate method until the server error is corrected.

Note: Your financial institution cannot resolve this issue.

To update your accounts immediately:

Log in to your financial institution's Web site. Navigate to the download page and click download to Quicken. Follow the on-screen instructions to update your accounts. Periodically click the Update Now button on the account Overview or Summary tab to see if the server issue is resolved. Once you successfully update your account this way, you can continue using One Step Update for this account."

This has been a continual error with no apparent fix?

I am running Vista, and my INI file looks like: [Quicken] Version,Quicken 2009 Platform=Win32 UsedOnlyForQuickPayroll=1 ExePath=C:\Program Files\Quicken\QW.EXE [autopatch] PatchFatalError=0 testpatch=1

and it is located in the c:\windows folder.

As far as I know, the new server is only intended to address issues with downloading quotes.

Apparently so, I did have hopes. There's a bunch of information here and elsewhere about the Chase Visa card problem and I've tried most, if not all, of the fixes, even those that seem to don't apply which is why I tried this one but no luck. If I re-activate the account it will download the information with no problems at all but.... one time only. If I want to update later I have to reconfigure all over again.

I wish I could figure it out...

That is all and well fine, but I do not SEE a programdata folder....so unless I can find the root I can drill down to ProgramData\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\Quicken\

John, Will Intuit release a update for this change???

I don't work for Intuit, so I couldn't give you any reliable information about Intuit's release plans.

But I don't understand what "change" you are interested in an update for? The quotes server that is the subject of this thread is available to users of all versions/releases of Quicken (that are still eligible for downloading quotes).

Thanks for clarifying your question.

First let me repeat: I have no knowledge what Intuit will do.

But, I find it incomprehensible that Intuit would create a new quotes server, put it to the test, determine that it was better than the old quotes server ... then not make the new quotes server, the default quotes server.

If, when, how that will occur; I can't say. But I'm willing to bet that (assuming the new quote server works better than the old), users will not have to modify their quicken.ini files in the future.

Indeed: the info that I passed on in this thread came from Intuit ... and it came with the additional information that Intuit wanted Quicken users to try the new server to see if it was working better than the old server.

The new server is in an evaluation stage. You have an opportunity to participate in an evaluation of the new server. You can take the opportunity if you wish ... or you can ignore it.

I'm willing to bet that if the new server proves better than the old (and I can't imagine that it won't), that future versions/releases of Quicken will include (AT SOME POINT) the use of the new server without any user having to lift a finger.

I switched yesterday and I would guess that the new server is getting a worse case workout based the volatility of the market. I surmise that many people would be accessing the server to get the latest value of their portfolio. So far, the server has worked well with nary a glitch. So far, I think Intuit has a winner on this one.

FWIW, I used that patch successfully through 10/31/2008. After that date, I could no longer download the quotes. I removed those lines and download quotes now works again. Presumably, they made the beta site operational and no longer need a test site.

Thx for the tip, Arnie. I couldn't download quotes tonight, and I can usually get 'em by 6PM ET. I saw your msg and removed the sun/moon lines from my Quicken.ini. Sure enough, quotes immediately downloaded w/o a hitch.

Margaret

A big thank you from here also. Same issue, same fix.

The quotes history may be a tad screwy (even after a 1 month refresh - eg. highs & lows not showing for November 4, and there's and the Nov 4 quote is duplicated for Nov 5 (before market opened) - but I reckon that'll straighten itself out.) I assume that when I "download historical prices," say for 1 month, the new data replaces the old. Would appreciate hearing if that's a bad assumption.
