Inventory Manager

I have a copy of inventory manager which came with an earlier version of Quicken. I don't have the details or CD before me. I keep getting the Q2004 end of life screen when I start up and thought of this question. Quicken now wants about $30 for this program.

I didn't try to load inventory manager on top of Q2004 but I did successfully load it on Q2001. My copy must be from one of the late

90's program.

Can I load this older inventory program on top of Q2006 or Q2007? Will it be integrated into the menu options?

Hi, Bud.

Do you mean Quicken Home Inventory?

That's MUCH different from a business "inventory manager", which is what that phrase means to me. I've been using Quicken since 1990 and I don't recall that it ever had an "inventory manager".

We have discussed the QHI here several times, but I don't know the current situation. I tried using the QHI when it first arrived, but I abandoned it before Quicken did.

I bet it is Home Inventory. I had it as part of a Quicken package, procrastinated, never used it. I will have to dig through several boxes of old software and to find it.

I now have time to >Hi, Bud.

An Access file would be more suited to that kind of use.

I use the Home Inventory program that came with Q2005P and really like it. It's great for keeping track of when and where something was purchased as well as the cost. It also exports the total to Quicken. You could use MS Access or Excel, but I find that Home Inventory has just the right amount of features to get the job done. In some respects it's nice that feature creep hasn't bloated the program with things not needed. I sure hope Home Inventory hasn't been deleted from Q2007. Please let me know if this utility has been deleted from the current version of Quicken. Don

There are multiple "Andrew"s in the list...not sure which one you meant. I hope it's not me....whether one top or bottom posts, that's a religious war, and I'd personally try to stay away from commenting! (Although maybe I did, but I doubt it!).

It's still in my 2007P and I like it too.

I'm running QP2007 which still has the original QHI program within it. I ended up switching to Frostbow Home Inventory (someone on this group recommended it sometime ago).

Anyway, my preference would be a program that actually integrates with Quicken (as does the new ~$30 QHI). I was a beta tester for the new Quicken Home Inventory program and have tried the final release. Of course it's a 1.0 version, so although there are some very nice features, it's still a "young" program and IMNSHO needs some maturing. I ended up removing it from my computer, however, because it slowed it down (not just the running of the new QHI, either), requiring a restore of my previous Windows "image" file to return its immediately prior snappiness. (I have a pretty powerful PC w/ 1GB RAM and *lots* of hard disk space, too.)

You see, my big complaint is that the new QHI requires Microsoft's SQL Server (not the whole version, it's the smaller free version that comes w/o the config GUI). I'm sorry I'm drawing a blank on the exact name (maybe SQL Server Express? MS has changed the name over the last few years, helping to lead to my memory loss here!). This limited SQL Server version is included in the QHI install, but IMO, the new QHI is simply too sluggish to use, and the hit to my PC's overall performance was unacceptable IMO. (The above mentioned Frostbow Home Inventory lacks Quicken integration but is a great program with a tiny footprint and is speedy, too.)

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Quicken lover/addict, whatever you prefer to call it. I'd be using the new QHI if it weren't for the above reasons, and in all fairness, I have not checked to see if the program has been updated and "tuned" in any way to make it speedier and less of a resource hog. My recommendation would be to check on the Quicken Support Forum and see how other users are fairing with this program before making a final decision. Here's the URL:

Hope this helps,

I've been able to start the old Quicken Home Inventory program in stand alone mode without actually starting up the main Quicken program. Only problem I can see is that the total can't be imported into Quicken. If I could export my current inventory, I'd move to MS Access. There's a sample home inventory program included with MS Access that meets my needs.

I too was a Beta tester. Unfortunately, the new version of QHI will not work under Microsoft Windows Vista. This seems bizarre to me - why did Quicken develop and release a produce which won't run under the latest version of the most used operating system?

I have been unable to find out if/when QHI will run under Vista.

Hi, Philip.

I'm resurrecting this 4-month-old thread to say that QHI.exe DOES run in Vista Ultimate X64 now. The file Properties screen says it is version

16.1.5.7, 805 KB, dated 5/7/2007 2:18 PM. Intuit must have included the new version in one of those automatic updates. But the Help screen from inside QHI says that it is Copyright 1993-1999, so it obviously hasn't been updated for a while.

I've not tried to actually use this program in years, but I can run it either by clicking on the QHI.exe file or by starting Quicken 2007 Basic, then Property & Debt | Quicken Home Inventory Manager.

Many thanks for the response.

Where did you get this version of QHI from? The Intuit web site still says that Vista is not supported (Question 5813).
