Quicken uses sets of files. qdf is the main data file. NEVER, never just back up 1 file of the file set. Always handle the whole set as a set.
Hope you have a abckup of the "old" file set. Look on your old computer for all *.qdf files and where they are located (I don't remember the exact backup scheme that Quicken used for 2001). Do the same with the laptop.
Make backups of all files you can locate and their associated brethren (all the other files with the same name, but different extensions, but make sure you keep them separate as sets with the same main name and directory. Label them carefully so you will know which file set ccame from where.
Now open the most recent set that you think is still intact, and see what you need to do to bring it up to date. Rename the file set, so you will never confuse it again with the screwed up set. If this file set is not OK, you'll have to go to an earlier one, etc.
I have a backup scheme using the freeware Karen's Replicator that makes daily backups into directories that are named with the date as part of the name, so I can go back more easily if needed. I do have to weed out every once in a while to conserve disk space.
Look in your folder where you keep your Quicken data file for another folder titled \BACKUP. Within that will be sets of Quicken files QDATAn.xxx where QDATA is the name of your Quicken data file, the n indicates how recent Quicken took the auto backup (1 is most recent) and the xxx are the various filetypes. COPY one complete set of files to a new folder on your computer and see if you can open that.

You could copy all those files to a separate directory on the desktop machine. Then double-click on that qdf file. If the files are in good shape, they should open.
I use a shortcut to my main qdf file to start my Q2005DL (US).
