How to restore default categories list in Quicken 2005?

I've just set up my accounts on Quicken 2005, and in the process I wanted to set up my categories list to reflect the categories in my personal budget. In my haste to get set up I deleted several of the default categories before I realized that the defaults have helpful tax information associated with them.

I'd like to restore the original categories list along with the tax line item associations if I can so I don't have to dig through my tax reference book to find out what associations I need. Is there a way to do that?

If that's not possible, is there anywhere I can get the list of default categories along with the tax line item associations? That way I could recreate the list myself.

Thanks very much for your help.

I know of no way to restore Quicken's default categories, but you can easily reproduce them anytime you wish: just create a "New" Quicken data fileset. (File > New > New Quicken File).

You could actually use that file, but it sounds like it would be simpler to just look at or print out the categories in the New file, then add the ones you want back to your regular file.

It's also possible to export categories to a QIF file and import that QIF file to another Quicken data fileset.

Try this:

STEP 0 - Make a backup copy of your live data to play with in case it doesn't work.

STEP 1 - You can create an entirely NEW Quicken file (NOT Account, but a new file, perhaps in a temporary directory to keep things separate.)

STEP 2 - Then you can use EXPORT to export ONLY categories (uncheck all the types of transactions EXCEPT for categories). Goes to a QIF file, even in Q2005.

STEP 3 - Then you can IMPORT that list to your current file (or backup file from STEP 0 above just to test first before going live.). (This step I haven't tried personally.) They should be available to use now in your real data.

Even if this doesn't work exactly as you'd like, you STILL have the ability to look at the categories in the newly created file from step 1 and see what the vanella version looked like.

Let me know how it works.

Thanks very much! That seems to have worked perfectly.

I appreciate the quick response from both of you.

Although this is late for it to help Michael, maybe it will help others. In Q2005 open the Category List window and then click the Add from List button, lower left. This displays the Add Categories dialog box/Window where you can select the different standard Categories offered as the default. I do not know if Marking All and adding them would create duplicate entries or possibly harm/delete any sub-categories a user may have created.

Thinking out loud here: Wasn't there a category repair function in Q2004 or prior, that would allow the user to reset the Category List to the default entries and possibly preserve user defined categories and sub-categories?
