Is 2009 compatible?

First the question. Is Q 2009 compatible with Q 2008 data files?

Venting. I just bought Q 2009 Starter Edition because my old 2008 would not install on my Vista computer despite Q support's efforts. The first install screen of 2009 says "Warning Quicken Starter Edition cannot convert your data files from a previous version of Quicken, you must upgrade your 2009 version". I called Quicken support and could only get a recording that said if I went on line (as if everyone has access in front of them all the time) I could request someone to call me back, it would be within 10 minutes. Once online they say it is "usually" within 1 hour and there is a $29.99 charge! I have said for year that Q has absolutely no regard for customers. If it wasn't for my wife I'd go back to Excel. End of vent. Hopefully someone can tell me why I am wrong.

Quicken STARTER edition is for beginning Quicken users (not necessarily rank "amateurs", just people with minimal needs). You want at least Deluxe to convert the 2008 files. Basic is no longer available.

You should have an option in Tools menu to upgrade to a "higher" version of Quicken.

Oh yes I have the option to do so for another $30 (because I/Quicken couldn't get my 2008 installed). I do not need any more features than "Starter" offers. I do not see any refute of my impression of Quicken however.

Hi, Bob.

Quicken Start Edition is for someone who is using Quicken for the first time - and has NO prior data to bring forward.

Even if you got the 2008 STARTER Edition, it could not import your 20008 data.

As Al said, it does not imply "amateur". Just that it is being used to start a file from the beginning.

If you do manage to get through to Quicken Support - whether paid or free - they should tell you just what Al and I have told you. And it is consistent with what you should be able to read on any Starter Edition retail box before you buy it.

Go get your money back for the Starter Edition and figure out how to install Quicken 2008 (or 2009) on your Vista computer. Most of us have no such problem, so you need to figure out what's different about your computer. If you will give us some basic details about your system and tell us HOW you tried to install it, we probably can help you do that. But we can't see your computer, so you'll have to tell us everything that we need to know.

This is a minor point, and probably not particularly useful to the op, but just to avoid any confusion for other readers of this thread: for the first time (to my knowledge), there is a Quicken "Starter Edition" (formerly, New User Edition) that CAN convert a file from another Quicken version. Q2009 Starter Edition can convert data from Q2008 Starter Edition.

[And since I don't have access to the op's post, I'll also add here that there is no charge for support for installation or conversion issues. Indeed, since they can't charge you without your credit card number, there is no need to fear to call, or contact, any product support department: you can talk until they tell you that you have to give them your credit card number to continue.]

Thanks for the update.

By and large everybody does have always on broadband connections. This is the 21st century after all. Get with the program!

Which they wave for installation issues.

Then why do you deal with them?

Is Excel better than a wife? :-P

I have a Vista Home Premium Machine and have used Quicken 2008 on it without any issue. I did purchase Quicken 2008 because my earlier version was not listed as Vista Compatible on the Microsoft Website.
